Tucked into Brooklyn's Coney Island area, Amazing Aquarium has carved out a reputation as a go-to freshwater fish store with a genuinely impressive variety of species. Walk in and you'll find row after row of well-maintained tanks housing everything from Ellioti cichlids and African peacock cichlids to arowanas, color tetras, rosy barbs, and fighting fish. The store also stocks neocaridina shrimp, Amano shrimp, vampire crabs, and snails for the invertebrate enthusiast, alongside a solid selection of live plants.
The variety here is what draws people in — multiple reviewers note species they simply can't find anywhere else in Brooklyn. Prices are consistently praised as reasonable, especially given the breadth of stock. Beyond livestock, Amazing Aquarium carries tanks in varying sizes, decorations, covers, and the essentials needed for a full setup.
Staff have helped first-time fishkeepers plan their aquariums from scratch, walking them through tank setup and compatibility questions with real patience. The store itself is compact but clean, with a vibe that multiple visitors describe as pretty and well-kept. The tanks are visibly maintained, and the overall presentation gives confidence that the animals are being cared for.
Staff are generally friendly and willing to spend time with customers, particularly when it comes to stocking recommendations and setup advice. That said, the store's no-return, no-exchange policy on livestock is a real sticking point for some buyers. A handful of reviewers report fish or shrimp dying shortly after purchase, and the rigid policy means there's little recourse.
It's worth noting that many other customers report healthy, thriving fish that acclimate quickly, so experiences vary. If you're particular, inspect your animals carefully before leaving. For Brooklyn fishkeepers looking for uncommon freshwater species, competitive pricing, and a curated selection of tanks and accessories, Amazing Aquarium delivers a focused, no-frills shopping experience backed by staff who genuinely know their stock.

Mediocre, and extremely disappointing. The selections and variety were good at best, and the quality was poor. I ordered some Amano shrimp here, back in February and 2 out of the 3 died within the first month. Parameters were fine, and I acclimated them for hours. I believe that the cause of their death was linked to the bad quality of these animals Also, I was shocked when I heard HUGE misinformation from the staff, who said that you can put several goldfish in a 10 gallon? Absolutely disappointing.

This is my first time setting up an aquarium and I had the pleasure of visiting this store. One of the best stores I have been to and the workers there have been extremely helpful and so knowledgeable. They advised both me and my friend how we should set up our tanks and took their time woth us. Especially the female worker there was extremely patient and super nice. Will be going there again 💯

Avoid this place, do not shop here. They offer no guarantee on their fish and show zero regard for their customers. I spent over $60, and half the fish died the very next day. When I went back to the store they refused to offer a refund or even an exchange claiming their policy states no refund or exchange even if it’s 24 hours later, which is ridiculous. Take your business to a store that values its customers and stands behind what they sell. Save your time, money, and frustration.
