Tucked into Brooklyn, South River Aquarium is a cash-only tropical fish shop that draws a loyal neighborhood following with its wide selection and competitive prices. The store has earned a particular reputation among fancy goldfish enthusiasts — multiple reviewers specifically call out their beautiful orandas and ranchu goldfish, with some customers making repeat visits just to browse the latest stock. If you're in the market for fancy goldfish in New York City, this is a spot worth knowing about.
The inventory leans freshwater and tropical, with reviewers praising the unique and varied selection. Staff members like Kevin and Harry get personal shout-outs for their knowledge and willingness to help customers find exactly what they're looking for, whether that's a specific species or a full starter setup for a first-time fish owner. One reviewer recounted buying their daughter her first fish here, noting how the staff patiently answered every question and made sure they left with everything they needed.
The atmosphere is straightforward and unpretentious — this is a neighborhood fish shop, not a flashy showroom. Prices are frequently praised as great, and the store's unique inventory keeps regulars coming back to see what's new. Several customers describe it as a go-to destination, with one noting their boyfriend and her frequent the shop regularly.
A few important caveats: the store is strictly cash-only, so plan accordingly. And like many independent fish shops, there's no return or exchange policy on livestock, which has frustrated some buyers who experienced fish losses shortly after purchase. The store's health track record is mixed in the reviews — many customers report quality, healthy fish, while a handful have had significant losses.
It's worth inspecting fish carefully before purchasing and asking staff about quarantine practices. For Brooklyn freshwater hobbyists looking for a locally-owned alternative to chain pet stores, South River Aquarium offers personality, selection, and knowledgeable staff at fair prices — just bring cash.

Went here to get my daughter her first fish. The man who helped us was very friendly and helpful, answering all our questions as first time fish owners, and making sure we had all we needed.

A week ago we got 11 fish from here, spent $75, and already four of the fish have died. The first fish literally died the next day! And the othered kept dying afterwards. We came back to exchange them for the same exact fish and a guy said wouldn’t let us. This place is trash! Don’t buy your fish here. I would rather go to a chain like Petco, so at least if the fish die a week later, you can exchange them. PS… In response to the owners reply… I’d like to add, the fish I had in the tank before we purchased fish from this scam shop, have been alive for 7 plus years…. So yea, we have experience caring for our fish. This place is just money hungry.
