About
Fish Addicts NYC has earned a devoted following among Brooklyn fishkeepers who would rather buy from people who actually keep tanks than wander a big-box aisle. Tucked into the neighborhood, this aquarium store carries a genuinely diverse range of livestock spanning freshwater, brackish, and a saltwater section that regulars have watched grow over the years. Its real reputation, though, is cichlids: longtime customers call it among the best cichlid spots in Brooklyn, with green terrors, flowerhorns, and Lake Malawi species often in the tanks.
If you have been hunting cichlids for sale in Brooklyn, NY, this is the shop people point you toward, alongside fancy guppies, pacus, and the cheap feeder goldfish that keep big tanks fed. The staff are the store's real currency, and Crystal's name comes up again and again. Reviewers describe being walked through a tank setup from scratch, talked out of an incompatible impulse buy, and even helped to nurse a sick fish bought elsewhere back to health, with one customer crediting the team for saving a PetSmart rescue.
Newer visitors echo it: shoppers who have come here for years say the staff are always willing to track down whatever they need, and first-timers leave recommending the place to anyone who will listen. For planted-tank builders, the live plant and aquascaping selection is a genuine draw, and substrate and aquarium supplies sit right alongside the livestock, so a fresh setup or a quick restock is a single stop. The tanks themselves are consistently described as clean and the fish as visibly healthy, showing the deep, strong color that comes from proper feeding.
Prices run a touch above the chains, and a few reviewers wish they were lower, but most happily pay it for healthier animals and honest guidance rather than an upsell. For Brooklyn hobbyists who want cichlids with character, live plants for a new aquascape, or simply a counter where someone remembers your tank size, Fish Addicts NYC is the kind of neighborhood aquarium store available in Brooklyn, NY that the chains cannot replicate.

— robert silva2.02 months ago“Please read if you are buying aquascaping plants I recently discovered this store, and they have a fantastic selection of both livestock and plants. However, I was disappointed to find that some of the plants I purchased, like the purple waffle and one other that I can't recall the name at the moment, are not fully aquatic and are not suitable for long-term submersion. I know I should have done more research before buying, but I ended up spending $30 on plants that won’t thrive in my aquarium for more than a few months at best. While the staff is great and the selection is impressive, I would recommend doing a bit more research before selling plants that are marketed for aquascaping. It’s frustrating to spend money on plants that aren't suited for an aquatic environment. I’ll still return because of the great service, but I hope they can better differentiate between fully aquatic and non-aquatic plants in the future.”

Crystal was very nice and helpful, and took her time to help me understand how to set up my tank. Some great fish and animal here. Will visit again and def recommend.”
— Taimoor A.5.03 months ago“They can seriously mislead customers to make a sale and put the animals lives in danger. It's really concerning.”
