Papa Jim's Tropical Fish on the south side of San Antonio is one of those neighborhood institutions that's been earning loyal customers for well over a decade. Walk through the door and you're immediately greeted by staff — reviewers frequently mention Gabriel and George by name — ready to help with anything from setting up a turtle habitat to rehousing a baboon tarantula. This is not just a fish store; it's a full-spectrum exotic pet shop stocking freshwater tropical fish, koi, pond fish, birds (say hello to Zazu, the store's resident celebrity), reptiles including corn snakes and bearded dragons, rabbits, and small mammals.
The freshwater selection is the main draw on the aquatic side, with angelfish, pea puffers, and a range of tropical species regularly in stock. Pond keepers will find koi and other pond fish at competitive prices. While a few reviewers note the saltwater and invertebrate selection is limited, the freshwater variety is substantial.
Tanks, aquarium kits, air pumps, sponge filters, conditioners, and feeding supplies line the shelves — essentially everything needed for a complete setup. One distinctive policy worth knowing: Papa Jim's may ask to see photos of your existing enclosure before selling certain animals. It frustrates some shoppers, but it reflects the store's commitment to responsible pet ownership.
The bilingual staff (English and Spanish) takes time answering questions without pressuring purchases, a quality multiple reviewers highlight. George, in particular, earned praise for offering honest, no-pressure advice to a customer who hadn't even bought their tank there. The store's atmosphere is compact and busy — parking is tight off a well-trafficked street — but the enclosures are generally clean and well-maintained.
Prices run slightly below big-box competitors like Petco and PetSmart, which keeps regulars coming back weekly for crickets, dubias, pinkies, and feeder supplies alongside their fish and reptile needs. Papa Jim's has earned its reputation as San Antonio's go-to independent pet shop through consistency, variety, and staff who genuinely care about the animals leaving their doors.

Great place for all accessories needed for the novice to the advanced reptile enthusiast. With all my years as a python keeper, the place I considered to surrendered my pets due to traveling for work.

Papa jims has always been the goat as long as I've been going there. I started going there back in 2012 and it was great then, still great to this day.

Stopped by today just to ask some questions about an aquarium I got somewhere else. George was awesome—super helpful, answered everything, gave solid advice on what to do next, and didn't try to sell me a bunch of stuff I didn't need. Great no-pressure vibe and real knowledge. Definitely recommend if you're into fish or need good tips!
