About
Lone Star Aquariums is a family-owned, family-run aquarium store in San Antonio that has earned a devoted local following for healthy stock, fair prices, and staff who genuinely love the hobby. The shop leans freshwater-first, with cichlids, goldfish, bettas, livebearers like fancy guppies, and freshwater shrimp for sale in San Antonio, TX, alongside one of the strongest live-plant and planted-tank selections in town — reviewers point to healthy tissue-culture plants, mosses, and gorgeous display tanks. The saltwater side is more compact but punches above its weight on coral: regular Louie is repeatedly singled out for coral advice, and shoppers call the coral prices the best in San Antonio.
Staff names come up constantly — JC, Dylan, Louie, Luis, Hope, Miles, Patrick, and Juan all draw shout-outs for patient, no-judgment guidance. They mentor first-time saltwater keepers, walk new owners through acclimation, talk through tank mates before you buy, and special-order fish you can't find elsewhere. One hobbyist credited the team with clearing an algae bloom using Microbacter and ChemiPure Green; another had the crew come out and set up a brand-new tank from scratch.
The store stays clean and well-organized, stocks medications, supplements, food, and equipment, and offers a military discount. Lately the shop has grown beyond fish, adding a reptile and terrarium section — frogs, geckos, turtles, and axolotls now share the floor with the aquariums, making a visit feel like a kid-in-a-candy-store stop. As with any livestock store a few shoppers have reported fish-health hiccups, so quarantine new arrivals and ask about the return window.
Still, for San Antonio fishkeepers hunting healthy freshwater fish, corals, and live plants available in San Antonio, TX, Lone Star Aquariums delivers the neighborly, knowledgeable service the big-box chains can't match.

— john olmedo5.03 weeks ago“*Update. Was told that the owner was out of town and we would get a call back regarding issues we had. He was very polite and explained the have a 2 day return policy and we would get a call back once the owner returns. OWNER NEVER CALLED. We are fortunate that only 1 of our other fish and the snail died because of the issue but that’s after spending more money on treatments. If you plan on buying fish from here calculate the additional cost of treatments and pray your fish survive. Bought some plants and fish from this location and the fish had ick. Treated the tank and thinking this was just a fluke, went back over a month later to buy more fish. We lost some fish the first time but thought we would give them another chance. Purchased more plants and fish on May 16th and now both tanks have ick again. We called and after losing about $50 worth of fish and spending $$ on treatments for our tanks, we will never buy fish from this store again.”

— Ethan Monster5.0a month ago“Stopped in today for the first time. I drive by it almost daily, but I’ve never seen it until a few days ago. This place is amazing! I felt like a kid in a candy store. They have huge variety of fresh, salt water, and plants. If you’re into frogs and geckos, they got those as well. The staff was great and knowledgeable as well. Skip the box stores and check this place out, you won’t regret it!”
