The Aquarium Shop Westbury on Long Island has built a loyal following among local fishkeepers who appreciate its clean, well-organized displays and genuinely healthy livestock. Staff members John and Jason are frequently singled out by name — John once recommended a medication for a customer's sick betta that resolved the issue in just two days, the kind of practical, targeted advice that keeps hobbyists coming back. The store stocks both freshwater and saltwater fish alongside a coral selection that reviewers describe as vibrant and outstanding.
Clownfish purchased here have impressed buyers with vivid coloration, and the tropical plant section has recently expanded with competitive pricing on larger portions. The betta display draws particular attention: the shop keeps an impressive variety of bettas in conditions that stand apart from typical cup-on-a-shelf setups, showcasing the care that goes into their livestock management. Cichlid keepers may find the selection limited — at least one visitor noted a small cichlid offering with unclear species labeling.
And like any independent shop, The Aquarium Shop Westbury isn't immune to occasional livestock health issues; one reviewer documented an ich outbreak across multiple tanks. But the store's general reputation for cleanliness and attentive husbandry suggests these are exceptions rather than the norm. What distinguishes this Westbury shop from big-box competitors is the personal investment the staff puts into each interaction.
Prices aren't always posted on every tank, but employees are generally happy to walk you through options and pricing when asked. The store also stands behind its products — particularly its corals — addressing issues promptly when they arise. For aquarium hobbyists on Long Island who value healthy fish, quality corals, and staff who actually know what they're selling, The Aquarium Shop Westbury delivers a shopping experience that feels more like visiting a fellow enthusiast's fishroom than browsing a retail chain.

Great experience, friendly staff. The store looks improved and expanded from my last vist. Great deal on tropical plants for a large portion.

Not helpful at all. Very small selection of cichlids. Didn't know which species the ones they had were. Not very friendly.

Great place. Very knowledgable. This place has healthy fishes that are meticulously cared for. They are not like ‘puppy mill’ like big box stores. Would recommend to anyone.

Been in there a few times. I can never get anyone to help (and they’re NOT busy working with someone else.)

So disappointed to have to write this review as I normally rave about this place, but today I was horrified by what I saw. Most of their stock was COVERED in ich, with several dead fish on display in various tanks who had clearly succumbed to this illness. The bettas were in terrible shape as well, some dead or clearly very sick.. please do better, I would love to update this review in the future. Fish deserve better!!!

Store is clean and organized. Prices aren't clearly listed for all livestock but someone will be glad assist. Got my Clownfish here and his color is so vivid and bright and he's enjoying life in his new home. Wish more stores were as clean as this one, really appreciate the effort u guys take to keep livestock happy.

The best aquarium store. I’ve been coming here on and off for years and after my recent visit will be making a point to only shop here. John I believe his name was. Was extremely helpful in recommending medication for my betta, which completely solved the issue in two days. The pricing and selection is very good. As well as the selection of fish and aquatic plants. I was really impressed by how they keep and display bettas for sale. Which they had so many amazing varieties I wish I had room to buy and keep. Thank you guys!
