About Tropical Showcase

Tropical Showcase in Hicksville, New York, is one of those increasingly rare independent fish stores that Long Island aquarists drive well out of their way to visit — some traveling 30 minutes or more from Queens and across Nassau County. Walking in, you'll find rows of clean, well-maintained tanks that reviewers describe as feeling like miniature underwater worlds, each stocked with healthy freshwater fish and live plants. The bettas here aren't languishing in tiny cups; they're housed properly, which tells you a lot about how the store operates.

The freshwater selection is the heart of the business, with everything from plecos and angelfish to axolotls and less common species you won't find at the big-box chains. Live plants get prominent billing alongside a solid array of decor and dry goods. Staff members Ben and Jim are frequently mentioned by name, praised for their depth of knowledge — whether it's walking a first-timer through tank setup, troubleshooting a pH crash for axolotl keepers, or performing electronic water testing to diagnose betta tank issues.

With 50-plus years of combined experience between current and previous ownership, the expertise here is genuine and deeply rooted. The store also carries used equipment and tanks at good prices, an uncommon perk that budget-conscious hobbyists appreciate. Reviews hint at an upcoming saltwater section, which could expand the store's appeal even further.

Some customers note that prices on common freshwater fish run higher than chain competitors, and a few have had less-than-stellar service interactions, but the overwhelming consensus is that the quality of livestock, cleanliness of the facility, and caliber of advice justify the premium. For anyone maintaining tanks on Long Island — from a single betta bowl to 15 setups — Tropical Showcase has established itself as the local fish store people keep coming back to, and for good reason. It's an old-school aquarium shop that has adapted without losing its soul.

Best fish store i’ve been to, drove 30 minutes out to Long Island from Queens for it. Answered the phone when I called, knew the answer to all my questions, plenty of parking, easy to find. Place was very clean and all the fish looked extremely well taken care of. The betas were not in tiny cups, all the tanks had a proper quantity of fish and were not overcrowded. Customer service was amazing, all the employees were very friendly and helpful. My new go to fish store.

I had an amazing experience at Tropical Showcase! The variety and beauty of the fish displays are absolutely stunning — each tank feels like its own vibrant underwater world. You can tell the team here truly knows their stuff; their knowledge and passion for marine life really shine through. Every setup is so well maintained and thoughtfully presented, making it both educational and mesmerizing to explore. Whether you’re an enthusiast or just curious, I’d highly recommend visiting — it’s a true gem for anyone who appreciates the aquatic life. Worth the visit

Went in there for some fish. Guy didn't really care just wanted to make a quick sale. He didn't even ask me what set up i have and I bought a few small fish but they died because they got sucked in by the filter. The fish lasted about an hour. Had he takin the time to ask me what kind of set up I have that could've been avoided and the fish would still be alive today. Very disappointed in them to say the least. Won't be going back to them. 👎

Very knowledgeable people with tons of experience. Really helped me dial in my tank for my Axolotls when the pH crashed and my parameters went out of whack. I had no idea what to do, 1st timer here. All the products you will need to set up a tank of any size. A true one stop shop.

Pretty nice place, staffs are friendly. Decent choice of very healthy aquatic life. I only minused 1 star because prices are kind of high. Even for certain very common fish. I will be shopping there more often though.

An old-school aquarium supply store with much better stock than the pet supply chains. There used to be stores like this nearer my home, but like so many I've visited over the past two decades, they are gone. I'm glad this one is still around. I bought a small Plecos -- the chains had none -- about two weeks ago and waited on this review to see how it did. It's thriving. The selection was limited when I visited, but there were some attractive species I've not seen elsewhere. I will return for a second look and more fish later this month.

Just went in to see what they had. I have been going to that store for many years when Gene owned it. The person I asked about Angel fish was rude. I asked if small ones were coming in soon. He told me they will only stay small for a couple of months and then I will be ending a bigger tank. Ridiculous answer!! If you don’t want to sell fish then that’s the perfect way to answer a customer. I will find some fish somewhere else!
