About
Buckley's Fish Room in Ballston Spa, New York has built a loyal following across the Capital Region — and beyond — with a deep inventory of both freshwater and saltwater livestock, corals, and supplies. Under owner Matt's stewardship, the store has earned a reputation for crystal-clear tanks, vibrant fish, and a staff that genuinely cares about setting hobbyists up for success rather than just making a sale. The saltwater section is a standout.
Reviewers rave about healthy zoanthids, rare clownfish, and a coral propagation setup that keeps the frag selection rotating. The fact that the saltwater systems are maintained at proper salinity — not hypo — and that new arrivals go through an observation period before hitting the sales floor speaks to the store's commitment to livestock quality. For freshwater enthusiasts, the selection runs deep: nano fish, rainbowfish, barbs, plecos, and gorgeous axolotls share space with an impressive array of live plants and hardscape materials like driftwood and stone.
What customers consistently highlight is the staff's honesty. One reviewer recounted how an employee refused to sell clown loaches to a customer whose tank was too small, even though it meant losing a sale. Another praised Shane for going above and beyond during a nano tank setup.
These aren't scripted interactions — they reflect a culture where hobbyist success matters more than the receipt total. Tanks range from nano setups to 75-gallon displays, and the store will happily order specific items if something isn't in stock. Aquascapers will appreciate the quality hardscape options and planted tank supplies, while reef keepers can geek out over coral care advice from staff who clearly know their stuff.
People regularly drive an hour or more to shop here, and the consensus is that it's worth the trip. Buckley's Fish Room combines serious livestock selection with the kind of personal, knowledgeable service that big-box pet stores simply cannot match.

— Curtis Hall5.021 hours ago“Some cool fish fresh and saltwater alike. They have gorgeous axolotols! Beautiful corals being grown. I was so excited to purchase some live plants for my aquarium and a few really nice pieces of driftwood at a great price. Learned a lot while I was there I'm very grateful for the time they took answering our questions and giving us some solid tips. We will absolutely be going back again.”
— Tori Amaral5.04 days ago“Staff member stayed with us for our entire time there. He was very knowledgeable about corals and fish. Prices were very good, on par with mail order taking shipping in mind. Great selection.”
— joe pannizzo5.02 weeks ago“My wife and I visited Buckley's yesterday. We were so impressed as soon as we walked through the door. Admittedly, we are new to tropical fish, but we've visited pet shops that display fish. Buckley's is way more than a step above the pet shops. They carry fresh water and salt water fish, quality accessories and knowledgeable assistance. We will recommend them to anyone who is interested in a quality tropical fish supply.”

— Conner Dillenbeck5.0a month ago“The staff here as very knowledgeable and will not just set you up for failure to make a buck. When I first went in to stock my new tank the guy helping me asked if my tank was cycled before he even bagged anything (and even asked if my friend gave me an old filter when I told him I was quick starting it with a friend's water). A different trip with a different person helping me they could have sold me some clown loaches, because my son was saying he wanted them. They then asked my tank size and pointed out it was WAY to small because those fish get so big. They could have just bagged them up and sent me home knowing that it would mean someday I would be coming in to buy a new tank when they loaches grew.”
— Joshua Johnson5.0a month ago“The best place to go for fresh and saltwater. Puts all other stores to shame!”
— F. Cachioli5.0a month ago“Fantastic selection of healthy, fresh and salt water fish. Tanks are clean, fish are vibrant and very active. Don't bother shopping around. The prices are very fair. If you are new or returning to the hobby, 100% go to Buckley's... No upselling, price gouging or gatekeeping. I am especially thankful to Shane. Shane, thank you so much for going above and beyond to assist me this morning with my new tank 12.5g tank.”
