About

Value Pet Center is a compact, densely packed aquarium store and general pet shop in Pennsauken Township, NJ, known locally for cramming more than 5,000 gallons of aquariums, terrariums, and enclosures into a tight retail footprint. For South Jersey fishkeepers, the draw is variety and convenience: rows of display tanks hold both freshwater and saltwater fish, and longtime regulars come specifically for color, shape, and size they won't find at a big-box chain. One recent visitor put it plainly after picking out a Savannah monitor — if you're after something beyond the usual Petco or PetSmart stock, this Pennsauken Township shop tends to deliver.

On the aquatic side, you'll find aquarium fish for sale in Pennsauken Township, NJ, including bettas and community livebearers like guppies, plus live aquatic plants (the plant selection runs small and a touch pricey), tanks, filters, décor, food, and general supplies. Feeder mice and rats are a reliable, long-standing purchase for predator and reptile keepers. Pricing on fish and accessories is generally considered fair, and the shelves tend to stay stocked.

The staff are the store's most-praised feature. Aquarium-savvy employee Yalissa earns repeat shout-outs for patiently walking customers through tank care and equipment choices, and recent shoppers single out Effy and Ceecee as kind and genuinely helpful. Reviewers regularly describe the team as friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to let kids hold certain animals, so if you have a setup question this is a shop where someone will take the time to answer it.

Reviews here are genuinely polarized. Alongside the loyal regulars, a meaningful share of customers raise concerns about crowded enclosures, store cleanliness, summer heat, and livestock that arrives stressed — bettas kept in small cups draw recurring criticism. As with any local shop, it's smart to inspect any fish closely before buying and to quarantine new arrivals at home.

For Pennsauken-area aquarists who value hands-on guidance and an unusually broad in-store selection, Value Pet Center remains a well-trafficked stop worth a walk-through.

  • “Honestly I could see why some ppl would be mad at how some the animals are kept. let’s be real for a moment though , most of these animals are in display tanks for ppl to look through and pick whichever animal speaks to them . If they just had super big tanks all over the place with animals in them then they wouldn’t have as much space for other stuff and yea they could upgrade the store but im not gonna go that deep cuz I’m not the owner and maybe they could have plans in the works who knows. what I will say is if your looking for variety of color shape and size this is the place to go. I've been a fan of this place sense my dad took me a few years back before he passed and wanted to come back and purchase something you wouldnt find in your normal petco or petsmart and this place overly delivered. I’m very happy with my Savannah monitor and he’s in great condition once u get them set up . This place gives me nothing but inspiration to wanna work more with these animals rather it be a job or having to buy them for myself”

  • “This place is going downhill. They hired all new people that don’t know anything about pets. I honestly feel bad for the store. It’s turning to trash”

  • “Purchased, my first bunny I call him Choco. He’s defiantly a handful. They give you food well you have to purchase it per their policy. I had to get a second one they're so cuddly! Sidenote all the bunnies speak Español.😊”

  • “this is the review we will post after we get the refund WARNING – DO NOT BUY ANIMALS FROM THIS STORE We purchased a Holland Lop baby bunny from Pet Value and instantly fell in love. For the first week, everything seemed fine until the bunny suddenly lost its appetite and began having nonstop liquid diarrhea. We rushed the bunny to Red Bank Veterinary Hospital, where we spent nearly $600 on testing and medications. We were then given devastating news: the bunny had coccidiosis, a serious and often fatal disease in young rabbits. The vet told us to try treatment, but also warned that baby bunnies rarely survive this condition. After already spending close to $1,000 total, we contacted animal rescues for help. Multiple rescues told us this store has a reputation for selling sick animals, and they refused to take the bunny due to the risk of spreading disease. We called the store multiple times trying to speak with the owner, Pete, but never got a response. I do want to say that the employees we spoke with (Effy and Ceecee) were kind and helpful , this is not on them. Sadly, our bunny passed away the day after the vet visit. This was not just emotionally devastating, but financially draining as well. There needs to be accountability. Animals should not be sold in this condition, and customers should not have to go through something like this.”

  • “I went to this pet store and when i walked in i was looking forward in purchasing a pet like guppies or a bird but i couldn’t even stand a minute in that place due to the horrible smell in the store and how unhygienic the place looked. Very Disappointed”

  • “I don’t ever write reviews but I had to for this one. I went here today and had to leave because I was too upset over the situation I saw these animals in. They have entirely too many animals shoved into each cage. There were at LEAST 30 birds in one tiny cage, these poor babies were very clearly panicking over the lack of space. They were flying into each other which caused them to freak out more, furthering the stress and chaos. They also had well over 50 mice in one cage, climbing all over each other, and again clearly panicking. The beta fish looked sad and depressed in their tiny cups of water. Everything was very upsetting and not how any animal should be handled):”
