About
88 Pet World is a long-running, independent fish store and mom-and-pop pet shop in Brick Township, NJ, and for local fishkeepers the main draw is its dedicated fish tank room. Regulars describe a freshwater selection that, in their words, nothing else in the area can match — rows of pristine tanks stocked with community fish, a betta wall, and the occasional surprise like archerfish that you rarely see for sale at a small local shop. If you have been hunting for unusual freshwater species for sale in Brick Township, NJ, this is the kind of room worth walking through slowly.
Alongside the livestock, the shop carries a deep range of aquariums, filters, and fishkeeping supplies, plus live feeder fish for reptile owners and Fromm pet food that brings in regulars on its own. Customers searching "fish store near me" tend to come back for inventory you simply will not find at a PetSmart or Petco — and for staff who, review after review, are described as friendly and genuinely knowledgeable. People mention employees spending real time answering questions, offering care advice, and even helping with oddball situations like raising a hitchhiker anole that rode up from Florida.
It is a shop with personality and a loyal following: recent visitors still call it the "best local pet store around," and one notes the owner is a former Marine. As with any small store, opinions vary — a few experienced fishkeepers feel prices run higher than the big boxes, so it is smart to ask questions and inspect livestock closely before you buy. Beyond fish, 88 Pet World also stocks birds, reptiles, rodents, and other small animals, giving it the full classic neighborhood-pet-store feel.
For Brick Township residents who want a real fish room to browse and people who can talk specifics, 88 Pet World remains one of the area's go-to independent shops.

“Very knowledgeable staff and go out of their way to make sure all your pets needs are met”
— Peter Lott5.0a month ago“At the beginning of the year, I got a chinchilla that was sick and died within the week. They were not empathetic and told me it was my fault and that they couldn’t prove I fed it. I was willing to get it checked by a vet to confirm it wasn’t my fault and they didn’t care. I now have a healthy chinchilla from a place in New York and it was much bigger when I got it so it was proven that it was sick. I spend $350 on it which was a better price but I now understand why it was cheap, the animal was sick. Wouldn’t recommend to my enemy for emotional distress. (Photo was from the same day I got it and the cage wasn’t set up yet)”

— Paul G5.02 months ago““Unfortunately I had a very disappointing experience at 88 Petworld. Highly disappointed with the establishment. I purchased a bunny for $79.99 for my 5 year old daughter and within a week the bunny passed away. The only symptom I noticed was crusty eyes shortly after bringing it home. When I contacted the store, they refused to offer any reimbursement or solution. It was especially heartbreaking because I had to explain this to my child and then purchase another bunny where they full charged me again $95. I would strongly recommend that animals be health-checked more carefully before being sold. The man made me feel it was my fault when he uses pine shavings, which are highly toxic for bunnies where i learned that after purchase." This was orea my daughters bunny whom passed. Skye slept next to its cage every night and fully excited about this bunny. She was taking very good care of this bunny. I will not let this issue go. But people should be aware.”

— Yossi Rotberg5.04 months ago“Im giving this 2 stars because this place is way too small to be a pet store carrying these many animals especially that need extra care. I really dont mean to be that person but it doesn’t feel right with me, im sure im not the only one. The animals seem to always be in cages throughout the day waiting to be purchased. Dont shop, please adopt.”
