About
From the outside, The Fish Doctors looks like a tiny shack on the edge of Ypsilanti, MI, but step inside and the real store unfolds underground, beneath the sister building, into a maze of clean, well-stocked tanks that pulls fishkeepers in from Ann Arbor, Toledo, and across the Detroit metro. Regulars routinely drive an hour or more and turn the trip into a weekend family ritual. The selection is what earns those drives.
On the freshwater side you'll find bettas, oscars, snails, shrimp in one of the widest color ranges around, blue crayfish, and feeder fish for sale in Ypsilanti, MI, while the saltwater room keeps corals, hammer corals, and anemones. One recent visitor from Toledo came in for freshwater and left convinced to go saltwater, and loved it. Another had the staff help set up a brand-new saltwater tank, took the advice home, and reported the fish thriving.
Live plants and driftwood round things out for planted-tank builders. What sets this aquarium store apart is how much the team teaches. Staff like Rachael and James have built loyal followings, and one reviewer won't visit unless James is working.
First-timers describe being walked step by step through cycling, aquascaping, plant care, and livestock choices, calling it better than hours on Google or Reddit. The shop does on-site water testing and hands back a real plan for fixing tank problems, and it's one of the few places near Ann Arbor stocking Expel-P for camallanus worms along with treatment plans for sick oscars. When one customer hunted everywhere for a hard-to-find fish, this was the only store that took his name and called a week later when it arrived.
Prices can run a little above the big-box chains, but reviewers point to the pride in the water quality and the depth of knowledge as well worth it. 7-star reputation.

“Best Aquatics store in the area!”
— Samuel Kozak5.0a week ago“Love this place. The staff are very knowledgeable and helped me set up a new salt water tank. Took their advice and my fish has been doing well! Sundays are the busiest time for the store so I usually make sure I go there in weekdays.”
— Siyuan Jiang5.03 weeks ago“Great selection of fish”
— Yohei Shimazaki5.0a month ago“I called many stores looking for a fish. This is the only store that took my name and number down. A week or so later i get a very friendly call saying they have some in. It was my first time going into that beautiful fish store. I used to work at a small shop myself 10 years ago but I wish I worked there. The staff was beyond helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. I really wish I lived closer. Also, their tanks have amazing water quality. You can tell a lot of pride is in that shop. 10/10”

— Timmay Wood5.02 months ago“I’ve gone to this place for a long time but today is my last. Went in for premixed salt. 10 gallons brought my own jugs and had the guy give a bit of additude. Ended up getting to 5 gallons brought buckets from you guys because I was told 7$ each first fill free. Ended up being 35$ somehow.. doesn’t add up but okay. Now I’m home trying to fill a 10 gallon tank with 10 gallons of water. Would you guess. I ended up only getting 8 gallons. 35$ for 2 pickle buckets and 8 gallons of water that reads different per bucket. Thanks for the help on trying to kill my tank. Will not be returning anytime soon.”
— Jay Brown1.02 months ago“The fish doctor is amazing! Their staff are very helpful in determining what you should get and how to care for them. We have gotten fish year multiple times with no issues, whereas the one time we got fish from a department store they gave all our fish the "ick" parasite.”
— Dan Thurston5.03 months ago“Super helpful staff. Much better than a chain store. Definitely coming here for our Aquarium needs from now on!”
