Tucked away in Byron Center, Michigan, Dutch Family Reef (DFR Aquatics) has earned a devoted following among West Michigan's saltwater community — and for good reason. Owner Mike runs the kind of operation where passion is obvious the moment you walk in. The store specializes in healthy, well-priced corals, invertebrates, and saltwater fish, with customers consistently reporting that livestock thrives long after it leaves the shop.
One reviewer scored a rescue Lobo brain coral during a Michigan road trip and reported it bouncing back beautifully — a testament to the care that goes into every animal here. The retail side of DFR Aquatics operates on a somewhat irregular schedule, typically opening on Saturdays with updates posted to their Facebook page. But the flexible hours belie a serious operation.
Beyond the storefront's growing coral selection and healthy snails and anemones, Mike offers full aquarium maintenance and design services that have won over clients who previously dealt with negligent providers. One dental office credited Dutch Family Reef with rescuing their display tank after two prior maintenance companies left their fish in jeopardy. Another customer praised Mike for personally helping relocate a 180-gallon mixed reef tank, navigating tricky logistics with quick communication and hands-on expertise.
What sets DFR apart from larger competitors like Bluefish and VIPets is the combination of competitive pricing and genuine education. Mike doesn't just sell corals — he teaches new reefers how to succeed. Customers describe after-hours responses, house calls on days off, and a willingness to source specific invertebrates and corals on request.
The space itself is compact, but reviewers consistently note the variety packed inside and the quality of what's on offer. For saltwater hobbyists across the Byron Center and greater Grand Rapids area, DFR Aquatics delivers the kind of personalized, reef-focused service that big-box stores simply can't match.

If you’re looking for an amazing local fish store, look no further. From inverts to corals they will get what you need. Healthy fish and inverts that I have had 0 issues with. The corals are healthy and continue to thrive once added to our systems. Amazing staff that makes the process of reefing fun and exciting. Also the new owners are great and clearly care about the hobby!

Dutch Family Reef is incredible. We had two companies prior to Dutch Family Reef, and honestly they were both lack. The second was downright negligent and very rude. We lost several of our fish because of their inexperience. Dutch Family Reef not only knows what they are doing, they care! It is obvious in how our tank looks, and how happy our fish are. If there is ever an issue, which there rarely is, they come right out to make it right. We are so happy we found Dutch Family Reef, and I would recommend them to anyone. -Dental South

Made a quick stop here on a trip to Michigan. The owner hooked us up with a great deal on a rescue Lobo. It is now doing great. Can't wait to go back!

Mike was awesome in helping me move my 180 gallon mixed reef tank even when it required extra tricky maneuvering to get to the final location. Great service and fast responses! Thanks again Mike!

Great place, great costumer service. The owner came out of his way, for a costumer on a day off. Which not a lot of people do, Mike got great coral, it’s affordable, it’s in great condition. And you really don’t have to break your wallet to get nice stuff. This guy know what he’s doing, educate new reefer. Overall great store.
