Tucked into the Flint, Michigan fishkeeping scene, Aquatic Innovation has built a devoted following thanks to owner Jake and his team's genuine passion for freshwater aquatics. This compact store punches well above its weight class in selection, particularly when it comes to live aquatic plants — multiple reviewers call it the best destination in Michigan for floating and rooted species, including quality Anubias. The plant inventory is extensive enough that one regular jokingly warns newcomers to carefully inspect floaters for hitchhiking duckweed and pest snails.
The livestock is where Aquatic Innovation truly shines. Tanks are described as immaculate, and the fish radiate health — customers consistently report zero losses after purchase, a testament to the care that goes into quarantine and husbandry behind the scenes. The selection spans fancy guppies, bettas, shrimp, snails, and a rotating cast of freshwater tropical species that keeps regulars coming back.
One customer noted their betta from Jake turned out to be the friendliest fish they've ever owned. Jake and staff member Rob are the backbone of the operation. They greet returning customers by name, ask about their tanks' progress, and dispense practical, specific advice that helps hobbyists at every level improve their setups.
Several reviewers describe learning something new on every visit without it ever feeling like a lecture — more like a conversation between fellow enthusiasts. When issues arise, Jake has demonstrated a willingness to personally call customers and make things right, earning back trust in a way that impressed even initially dissatisfied visitors. Pricing is a recurring highlight.
Reviewers consistently describe costs as fair and competitive, making the hobby more accessible for the Flint-area community. A rewards program sweetens the deal for repeat customers. The dry goods selection covers essential equipment and products, though the real draw remains the living inventory.
For planted tank enthusiasts and freshwater fishkeepers in mid-Michigan, this store has become a destination worth the drive.

Entered this store as a normal person. Left emotionally attached to both the fish and the owner. Tanks are immaculate, fish are thriving, and the customer service is the best there is.

Everyone here is super friendly and knowledgeable. I'm always greeted shortly after walking in and I'm asked how my fish and tanks are doing. The selection of fish and plants are amazing and they have some excellent products as well. I really enjoy their rewards program as well. This place is amazing.

My original review was not the best, I gave a 2 star review due to a rude employee over a small miscommunication. I can confidently say they have FULLY earned their five stars back. Not even 24 hours after the original instance, the owner, Jake, personally gave me a call. He listened to everything I had to say and what happened and I have never heard someone be so genuinely apologetic which goes a very long way in my book. He fixed the issue immediately and went beyond what he needed to do! Jake is a great guy and more business owners should follow his lead. Can’t wait for my next stop in!!
