About
Highland Tropical Fish & Bird Haven is a family-run fish store in White Lake, MI with genuine history — its roots trace back to an original location off Woodward in Royal Oak before the family put down permanent roots in White Lake. Walk in and you'll find rows of clean, well-maintained freshwater tanks stocked with tropical species, white bristlenose plecos, and the shrimp lobsters longtime regulars can't resist — those tiny, oddball inverts that share shelf space with striking white and blue lobsters. The shop centers on freshwater, though it carries some saltwater stock too, and staff like Josh field koi pond questions with real patience and expertise.
If you're hunting white bristlenose plecos or unusual freshwater fish for sale in White Lake, MI, this is the kind of place where you never quite know what you'll walk out with. The fish side is only half the story. The bird section is a destination in its own right, from baby cockatiels to mature parrots, backed by a full wall of bird seed, toys, and grooming supplies — with gorgeous birds for sale alongside nail trims, beak trims, and flight-feather clipping.
They also board birds at reasonable daily rates and carry reptiles including chameleons, tortoises, and leopard geckos, making it a broader animal lover's stop than the name suggests. Bob and the rest of the crew are praised again and again for their knowledge: customers with cloudy tanks routinely leave with advice that works within the hour. Recent visitors highlight free water testing, trade-ins for store credit, and a guarantee on the fish they sell — small touches that keep people coming back.
Prices are generally fair, and while a few regulars wish the fish selection ran larger, what's stocked is healthy and well cared for. 7 rating, this White Lake, MI aquarium and bird shop has earned a following that spans generations, with customers returning decade after decade for feeder fish, supplies, or just the calm of a place that clearly cares about the animals it sells.

— fennecsdev5.0a month ago“Me and my boyfriend went to this fish store so I could get more things for my betta’s fish tank. He suggested getting red root floaters, and I loved the idea. Along with the floaters, I also bought one of their sucker fish to help keep my tank cleaner, and some decorative rose quartz. When we got home, we added the floaters and the sucker fish into my tank, and we put the extra floaters into our larger tank with another betta. Both bettas had been healthy and thriving for over a year at that point. Almost immediately, there was a horrible smell coming from my tank that had never been there before. Then on Mother’s Day, our betta in the larger tank passed away unexpectedly. He had always been healthy and active, so it didn’t make sense. Not long after that, my betta also died, which was heartbreaking because he was healthy and very well cared for. After thinking about it, the only unusual changes we had made to the tanks were the new floaters and the new fish. The sucker fish is still alive and doing fine, which makes the whole situation even stranger. I’ve added new plants to my tanks before and never had an issue like this, but this time I guess I wasn’t so lucky. I personally would not recommend this fish store unless you are starting a completely new tank, with only their fish and plants. Losing both of our bettas like this was devastating.”
