Blue Thumb in Saginaw, Michigan has earned a devoted following across the mid-Michigan aquarium community, with hobbyists driving an hour or more to shop there. The store stocks both freshwater and saltwater fish alongside a robust selection of live plants, corals, and all the dry goods needed to build and maintain a thriving aquarium. Every tank in the store is meticulously maintained — reviewers consistently note crystal-clear water and visibly healthy, lively fish.
The freshwater section features an impressive variety, including unusual species and kuhli loaches, while the betta displays put big-box pet stores to shame with proper water flow and more swimming room. Plants are sold snail-free, a detail that planted tank enthusiasts will appreciate — multiple customers have built entire aquascapes from Blue Thumb's plant stock alone. The saltwater and reef section is equally well-regarded, with corals available and staff who can walk a newcomer through every step of cycling a tank, from selecting a Fluval 32 Flex to choosing the right hardy starter fish.
Staff members Brandon, Brenden, and Shayla are called out by name repeatedly for their patience and depth of knowledge. One customer recounted how Brandon spent two visits helping him choose between freshwater and saltwater setups, explaining the pros and cons without pressure, then assembling all the right supplies and cycling tips for the chosen saltwater build. Another was given a personal tour of the back warehouse by Shayla, revealing the breadth of stock beyond what's on the sales floor.
Beyond the aquarium retail side, Blue Thumb also manufactures pond fountains and water features sold through retailers like Costco, with responsive customer service backing those products. Pricing on equipment like driftwood and heaters runs higher than online alternatives, but the quality of livestock, cleanliness of the operation, and caliber of in-store guidance make Blue Thumb a destination worth the trip for serious fishkeepers across the region.

Took my child to buy a fish. Told the young boy working that we wanted to buy a fish after talking to him. We walk over to the fish and he never came to help us. No other customers were there as we walk out the door i said i told him we wanted to buy a fish and he shrugged his shoulders. I would not recommend coming here.

My go-to aquarium supply 100%. Fantastic customer service, very knowledgable and experienced employees who are beyond capable and experienced to answer any questions or reccomendations for newer hobbyists. Brandon, Brenden, and Shayla are exemplary associates and extremely welcoming. They have outstanding display tanks, and their stock tanks are always squeaky clean with their fish healthy and lively right from the get-go. The live plant selection and saltwater section are fantastic as well. Full five stars from me!

Absolutely LOVE this place, wish I didn’t live so far away but probably the best thing for my wallet:) the tanks are BEAUTIFUL. The employees are very knowledgeable about everything, the plants sold are completely snail free. I’ve built two tanks from this store with their plants. They take great care of their fish, and their bettas home is wayyy better than a petsmart or petco. I do wish their bettas could have a better set up but they have water flow in there, more room to swim. Their bettas look so much more happy and healthier compared to pet smart or petco. Their products like driftwood, heaters, even aquarium tools are pretty expensive. Other than that it’s the best aquatic store around. They truly care about all aquatic life!

I’ve been going back and forth for almost a month trying to decide between setting up a natural freshwater tank or a saltwater tank. I finally stopped into Blue Thumb to make my decision, and I’m glad I did. I talked with a worker named Brandon, and he was awesome. Super helpful, not pushy or judgmental, and really knowledgeable about both setups. He took the time to walk me through the pros and cons and helped me figure out what would look best in my living room. After talking with him, I decided to go all in and picked up a Fluval 32 Flex for a saltwater setup. I came back the next day, and once again Brandon went above and beyond — he got me all the right supplies, explained what each one does, and gave me great tips for cycling the tank properly. My setup is running smoothly now, and I can’t wait to come back with my kids to pick out some hardy fish once it’s ready. Please make sure he gets the recognition he deserves — it’s rare to find someone that patient, genuine, and knowledgeable. He definitely made my experience a great one and got me excited to dive into the saltwater hobby! -Tyler
