About
Tucked along M-59 in Highland Township, MI, Fins & Filters is a compact, family-owned aquarium store that consistently surprises first-time visitors with just how much it packs onto its walls. Owner Gage, his wife, and their two rescued shop dogs set a tone closer to wandering through a friend's fish room than a retail aisle. Regulars like Doug White, who recently updated a five-year-old review, note that the newer ownership has had a clearly positive effect on both the livestock and the advice, and recent visitors describe the fish as healthy and happy, the tanks as clean, and the staff as genuinely knowledgeable whether you walk in with a brand-new tank or a long-running setup.
The selection spans freshwater and saltwater, with cichlids, angelfish, plecos, corydora catfish, and shubunkins for sale in Highland Township, MI, alongside a saltwater corner that famously includes a clownfish or two. Shrimp keepers can find livestock plus ready-to-go shrimp tanks, and the live plant wall — driftwood, rocks, and aquarium decor included — is repeatedly called the best-priced and highest-quality around. They even stock assassin snails for hobbyists fighting invasive hitchhikers in their planted tanks, and sell prepared aquarium water for the area's notoriously hard tap.
What keeps locals coming back is the hands-on care. Staff ask about your existing tanks before recommending anything, patiently walk kids through feeding routines, and have nursed sick fish back to health over several weeks. Livestock is quarantined before sale, so the animals you carry home are far less likely to introduce disease.
Marked as a reptile rescue above the door in large letters, the shop also takes in bearded dragons, turtles, snakes, and lizards with the same attentive approach. For Highland-area fish keepers who value honest advice and well-kept animals over big-box convenience, this walk-in aquarium store remains the neighborhood go-to.

Customer reviews
“Visited from out of town last month in April trying to find some koi but the employees were rude and told us they close in an hour and a half, so I just left and went to Highland Tropical Fish & Bird Haven in White Lake”
— I1.0a day ago“The owner guy was so nice, and get knowledgeable! Went in thinking we need one thing, but left with the correct! Will be going back for all out fishtank needs.”
— Michelle Payne5.0a month ago“Such caring people to take in and love reptiles that need rescued and medical attention. Not an ordinary " pet store." Much more! I read the negative review and wish people would ask "why" before assuming they know things. This store DOES say reptile rescue above the door in large letters.”
— julia Byrd5.02 months ago“Didn’t want to write this review, I’ve lived in the area my whole life. These people don’t know what they’re doing, and pictures don’t lie, this is what the reptile area looks like almost every time I’ve been in. Sick/injured or not these animals are not getting the care they need. The fish area is OK, but overall this store is very disorganized and there’s a lack of caring and it shows. From customer service to information given, cleaning and the overall care for the animals, this place needs new owners.”
— Honor Fortin1.02 months ago“Great place just recently found it.”
— Keith Myers4.02 months ago“The fish here are so healthy and happy. They have a great selection and the staff are very knowledgeable and friendly.”

— MechanicGuy885.03 months ago“The best place around for aquarium brainstorming and supplies. Basic needs or expansion dreaming- they've got the fish, substrate, and aquarium needs.”
— Tom LaPrise5.04 months ago“Updated my review from 5 years ago. Newer ownership has had a positive effect, very knowledgeable and care for the animals they sell. This is my go-to shop!”
