About
Watercolors Aquarium Gallery is the go-to aquarium store in West Michigan, and one visit to this Grand Rapids shop shows why locals keep coming back. It isn't a warehouse — it's a compact, thoughtfully curated gallery where every tank is kept in natural-like conditions and new arrivals are quarantined for roughly a month before they ever reach the sales floor. " The freshwater side is the heart of the store.
If you're hunting rare or unusual fish for sale in Grand Rapids, MI — including North American native species you won't find at a big-box pet shop — this is where West Michigan hobbyists end up. The live plant selection draws steady praise: shoppers come in for freshwater plants and leave happy with both the prices and the variety, and even families setting up their first small tank walk out with healthy plants, snails, and filters that actually work. Bettas here are kept in proper planted habitats rather than tiny cups, fins spread and looking healthy.
On the saltwater side the fish selection runs smaller, but the coral frags are a genuine draw for reef keepers, and the team runs fun proof-of-concept builds like fully sustainable saltwater nano tanks. Invertebrates round out both the freshwater and reef offerings. What sets Watercolors apart is the staff — knowledgeable, friendly, and patient enough to spend real time with kids and first-time tank owners.
They'll also special-order fish on request, and they produce a widely loved aquarium podcast along with active YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram channels. Prices sit a touch above the chains, but customers consistently say the livestock quality and personal service available in Grand Rapids, MI make it worth it. For the local aquarium community, this is an institution.

“This place absolutely amazing! I always look to them for the most up to date news in the hobby. They take quarantining and natural environment safety very seriously, and I can always count on them for quality fish and products!”
— Zack K5.03 weeks ago“This place is like a old school neighborhood store, in all the good ways. Everyone is super knowledgeable and helpful. They do serious quarantine of everything before it goes into retail tanks. They have some fun hobby proof of concept experiments, like completely sustainable nano tanks - but saltwater!”
— Dan B5.0Edited a month ago“I’m incredibly disappointed with a recent purchase from Water Colors that has turned into a nightmare. I bought a single guppy for my 29-gallon community tank. When it started acting strange and not shoaling, I thought it was being bullied, so I moved it to my 10-gallon to recover. It died shortly after, showing clear, stringy waste. I now realize that guppy was a "Trojan Horse" for Camallanus worms. Because I moved the fish before realizing it was parasitic, both of my tanks are now compromised. My Bolivian Ram, one of my favorite fish, is now visibly infected with red threads and hiding, while my Pearl Gourami is at high risk in the same water. For a shop that positions itself as an "Aquarium Gallery" with expert-level standards and a podcast, I expected much better quarantine protocols. A single $5 guppy has already cost me $20 in General Cure (which doesn't work for this) and another $40 for specialized Levamisole (Fritz Expel-P) just to try and save my collection. Treating this is an exhausting, expensive process involving massive water changes and weeks of stress. If you buy fish here, quarantine them strictly, because their "Gallery" stock just brought a devastating parasite into my home.”

— Doug Van Tuinen4.02 months ago“Very knowledgeable and friendly. I find their prices to be very competitive without undermining the quality of the stock.”
— Timothy Garvin5.03 months ago“Knowledgeable staff, great plants. Awsome setup for a small store”
— The Harrison Effect5.03 months ago“I am so beyond impressed with this aquarium store in Grand Rapids. Unfortunately, so many stores that sell betta fish, put them in tiny little cups with no stimulation. That was not my experience at all at watercolor aquarium gallery. I took a photo of the beta in his habitat, looking happy, healthy, and fins spread out. If you are going to buy any type of aquarium or fish in the Grand Rapids area, I would highly recommend this store. I came in to buy freshwater plants for my fish tank and couldn’t be happier with the prices and the selection. The person that was helping me at the front was incredibly kind and answered all of my questions.”
— Senya Reviews5.04 months ago“I really appreciate the variety of tank setups and staff expertise”
— carol weideman5.04 months ago“Awesome shop, great practice, good folks - can't wait to find a reason to go back!”
— Ryan J. Wood5.0a month ago“My 6 and 7 year old boys are experimenting with their first tank which is barely more than a fih bowl. We had a few rounds of big pet store purchases that ended poorly so we thought we would go to a real aquarium store. I honestly thought we would meet some "fish snob" who wouldn't give us the time of day, but the guy who helped us was knowledgeable, friendly and super patient with my kids. We bought a fish, some snails, plants and a filter, and had a great experience. This place is a gem and provides the old-school small business service that I love and I wish I could find everywhere!”
