About

Tropical Treasures has been part of the Clinton Township, Michigan aquarium scene for decades — one longtime customer's father worked the floor back in the 1980s — and the shop still runs on the same hands-on energy. Owner Michelle is the kind of fish store owner regulars rave about: she's on the floor every day, deeply knowledgeable, and refreshingly blunt. If something about your setup or stocking plan isn't right, she'll tell you, and customers say that honesty is exactly what you want from a local shop.

Her brother is just as devoted, always tending livestock and ponds to make sure people go home with healthy animals. The freshwater selection is the heart of the store. Reviewers who've kept tanks since the '90s say Tropical Treasures regularly stocks smaller community fish they've never seen anywhere else in the area.

Alongside the everyday tropicals you'll find more unusual choices like Senegal bichirs and African dwarf frogs, the kind of distinctive livestock that customers report thriving for months. If you're hunting for hard-to-find community fish for sale in Clinton Township, MI, this is the spot locals check first. Live aquarium plants are available too, though the selection can vary by visit.

The pond department is a destination in its own right. Beautiful butterfly koi, water plants, pond filters, and a deep shelf of pond essentials make this a go-to for anyone keeping an outdoor water feature in Macomb County — and the team happily walks first-time pond owners through everything they need. One regular says she waits for fresh koi just to buy here.

What really sets the store apart is care. Every new arrival goes through a mandatory quarantine, with a few-day grace period before any fish is sold, so livestock leaves the building healthy. The tanks are clean, the prices are fair, and you'll also find charming decorative aquarium figures to browse while you shop.

For healthy freshwater fish, koi, and pond supplies in Clinton Township, MI, Tropical Treasures earns its name.

Customer reviews

  • “This easily has been the best local fish store to go to. For starters, Michelle has a mandatory quarantine on all arriving fish which unfortunately cannot be said from other fish stores in the area. She is incredibly knowledgeable, and I am sorry if other reviews seems to have a problem with this, she will bluntly say if anything is wrong with your setup, stock, or otherwise, which is EXACTLY the type of qualities you want from a local fish store owner. If she is saying no to you, it is for a really good reason and you should be listening to her.”

  • “Honestly very disappointed had high hopes “owner” as she stated she was, was very rude and had very bad customer service. Wanted to ask questions and be sure I have the right things and she was very dismissive and overall seemed as if she had better things to do than help me . NEVER GOING BACK !”

  • “Ive been coming here for years. The owner... a woman, & her very cute well behaved pup are unbelievably helpful. I've never had an issue with my in house tank fish & pond fish & supplies. She cares for animals & her store as I would. She helped me with a new to me pond filter I was confused about. She told me everything I needed to know to not have any issues when I got home. My pond questions or in house tank questions are always answered fully with politeness. I always leave learning something new. To see an owner actually work and not watch pll work is rare these days. Shes not siting in a office on her phone. Shes on the floor working everytime. I wish I remembered her name. I believe its her brother.. is very helpful as well. He's always caring for the live stock or ponds making sure the customers are getting high quality products. 5 stars for sure. I'd like to add that when live stock comes in there's a few day grace period before she sells anything & I LOVE IT. She assures no sick fish are leaving her building. Again I've never had an issue and I've been going here for 7 years. I wait for new koi just to buy from tropical treasures. Just got 3 new koi a week ago!”

  • “These folks are bar none. Go here for fish and pond supplies but they also have other pet items. Very cool people and they'll help you if you're thinking about starting a pond.”

  • “Drove an hour to find out they don't have saltwater fish. Read reviews and they said they'd done away with most of it, but the lady I spoke with seemed like they were going to get saltwater fish. I highly doubt it because I remember going before, and she said the exact same thing. It's a pond and fresh water store only. Saltwater is there own 2 tanks big disappointment.”

  • “Absolutely love this place and the people who own and run it. After a month my fish are doing amazing. 2 weeks after I got my fish I came back and got some neocaridina shrimp. Over 2 weeks later they are also doing amazing. They gave me great advice. I'll recommend this place to anyone. And I look forward to coming in everytime I need or want something lol. Thank you for all the advice and all that you do.”

  • “I’ve spent close to $400 here in just a couple months starting my aquarium journey, and honestly, I expected little but better from a local shop. In the beginning, I actually prioritized coming here over other stores. Even driving 30+ minutes. Unfortunately, every visit I get conflicting advice, which makes things more confusing than helpful. My most recent experience sealed it for me — I bought a Java moss matt that was already dark and slimy. Ignorantly, I thought it was healthy and thriving, although I should’ve known by the dark green sludge, it wasn’t. It ended up leaching algae all over my tank (something I’ve NEVER had issues with before in my multiple tanks), and the moss underneath was brown and dead. When I brought it up, I wasn’t asking for a refund — just giving feedback. Instead, they were a little defensive and blamed my care, even though I was already following the exact care they suggested. What really concerned me was livestock at times. They mentioned their pygmy corydoras were struggling from a recent shipment. Although they had an aggressive male betta in the same tank, visibly stressing the fish, nipping fins, etc. When I pointed this out, the employee who usually has something to say about everything suddenly had no response. Especially as a woman, it was disheartening to hear him have everything and anything to say in regards to correcting my aquarium, care or knowledge, but the moment I pointed something out that was wrong on his and he ignored me. The lack of accountability, consistency, and awareness is frustrating, especially when you’re trying to support local. For comparison, I highly recommend Oceans and Seas for an additional stop to gather supplies— their plants thrive, they have multiple knowledgeable staff on hand, and a much better selection of aquascaping tools. Their Java moss comes in a cup and has no risk of leaching algae. Tropical Treasures sometimes feels more focused on pond and large aquarium supply and not very welcoming or helpful to beginner hobbyists. I would definitely be shopping here again, although only for my livestock.”
