Atlantis Fish Shoppe in Clawson, Michigan occupies a compact storefront near the Detroit metro area that punches above its weight in saltwater coral selection. The shop's coral frag inventory updates frequently and draws reef tank enthusiasts from across the region, with full-size coral specimens and anemones that multiple reviewers describe as genuinely impressive. Freshwater keepers will find a range of species including cichlids, goldfish, Celestial Pearl Danios, catfish, and axolotls, though the freshwater side takes a backseat to the saltwater offerings.
The shop is owner-operated — customers mention Dean and Steve by name — and that personal touch defines the experience. Regulars praise the willingness to answer questions at length, diagnose fish ailments from a phone photo, and even negotiate on pricing for hardscape. For reef tank newcomers especially, the one-on-one guidance has helped many customers build their first saltwater setups from scratch, learning something new with each visit.
Supplies for both freshwater and saltwater systems are stocked, and pricing on livestock is generally considered fair and competitive with big-box pet stores. That said, Atlantis has drawn pointed criticism about livestock health and tank maintenance. Several reviewers report encountering ich on newly purchased fish, Aiptasia in saltwater display tanks, and visible waste buildup.
A few customers lost fish within hours of bringing them home, and at least one reviewer raised concerns about fish being sold for tanks too small to house them. The store's small size means inventory can feel limited on the dry goods and hardscape side. At its best, Atlantis Fish Shoppe is a neighborhood coral destination with engaged, personable ownership and prices that undercut the chains.
At its most inconsistent, the husbandry issues give pause. Buyers who inspect livestock carefully and quarantine new arrivals will get the most from what the shop offers — particularly its standout coral frag wall, which remains the strongest reason to make the drive to Clawson.

We enjoyed our experience last week and bought fish. We went back for a few more fish last night. I noticed ick and a few dead dish. Man who was helping us said it was stress and new arrivals, sometimes fish die in Shipping. He was the same man from last week. I am fighting head cold so I was not thinking at full capacity. We bought a few fish. Within an hour if getting home, One was already dead. Then we noticed another fish was dead. A smallish catfish we purchased last week. Then...we noticed most of our fish were starting to be covered in white bumps (ick). I raced off to a local chain pet shop for treatment, after leaving a message, as Atlantis had closed an hour prior. While buying treatment, I saw the exact catfish we bought last week. With a minimum of 50 gallon tank required for it to be okay! The man knew we had a 20 gallon and still sold us the catfish. I have waited all day (with dead fish in my fridge) for a return call. I have the feeling that this may have once been a good place, but perhaps he's overwhelmed at this point. Upon reflection, the many tanks opposite the ones we purchased fish from, didn't look too clean. I WILL NOT be going back to Atlantis. I'm very upset my tank has ick and I'm now doing daily treatments. The two fish I lost were about $25. And, looking back, I wasn't given a receipt either time. I'll be going back to PetSmart for my fish.

Cant help but leave a review for this place. *****WARNING Aiptasia!!!!***** I popped in to check out the spot, and I was appalled at the condition of the tanks and the condition of the livestock in the tanks. The owner was helping a different customer, but I saw Aiptasia on nearly every salt water tank, and massive colonies at that. The fish were in dirty tanks, Ill accept some algae, but there was so much waste in each tank, I couldnt imagine that a pet lover would do this. I see many 5 star reviews, and cant help but think that those are all bought by the owner to make himself look better instead of improving his products and what he does. I would not buy anything from this store, until the husbandry of the aquatic animals improves drastically.

The owner of this store has always been very friendly and helpful whenever we come in. It’s been a staple shop in the process of our saltwater tank setup. The coral and fish selection are both good and the livestock is decently priced. I have bought multiple frags and a few inverts from this place, all of which are doing extremely well.
