Imperial Exotics in Springfield, Massachusetts has been turning heads since new ownership took over and elevated the shop's quality in a big way. Reviewers who visited a year ago and returned recently note a dramatic improvement — healthier fish, a wider selection of both freshwater and saltwater species, better plant stock, and more equipment on the shelves. That kind of upward trajectory is rare in the local fish store world, and it speaks to owners who genuinely care about the hobby.
The store lives up to its name with a focus on tropical and exotic fish, carrying species that go beyond the usual big-box fare. Tanks are clean and well-maintained, and the fish inside them are described as active and healthy — always a good sign that husbandry behind the scenes is being done right. Live plants get frequent mention, suggesting a solid inventory for anyone building or maintaining a planted tank.
Aquarium supplies, food, and equipment round out the offerings, making it a viable one-stop destination for Springfield-area fishkeepers. Staff knowledge is a consistent thread across reviews. Multiple customers highlight the helpful guidance they received on species compatibility, tank stocking, and general care.
One reviewer specifically noted receiving solid advice on which colorful species could coexist peacefully — the kind of practical, personalized consultation that prevents costly mistakes and dead fish. Pricing lands in the sweet spot: not bargain-basement, but fair for the quality of livestock and products available. Imperial Exotics has clearly carved out a niche as Springfield's go-to tropical fish destination.
The combination of healthy livestock, expanding inventory, knowledgeable staff, and reasonable prices keeps customers coming back. For anyone in western Massachusetts looking to stock a freshwater community tank, explore saltwater options, or simply pick up plants and supplies, this shop has earned its reputation through real, visible improvement.

I was looking to add a few colorful fish to my tank and decided to check out this tropical fish store. The place was clean, tanks looked well maintained, and most of the fish seemed healthy and active. The staff was friendly and gave me some good advice on which species could live together peacefully. Prices were fair, not the cheapest but reasonable for the quality. They also had a nice selection of plants and aquarium supplies. Overall, it was a pleasant visit and I’d probably come back again when I’m ready to expand my tank.
