About

European Aquatics Inc. is a family-owned aquarium store in Malden, MA that has earned a devoted following among Boston-area fishkeepers — some happily driving an hour or more to walk through its doors. The shop is compact but makes remarkable use of the space, with one side dedicated to freshwater and the other to saltwater, plus a planted display tank and a wall of aquarium wood, rocks, and substrate for aquascaping projects.

Freshwater hobbyists come for neocaridina and cherry shrimp in nearly every color morph, schools of neon and green neon tetras, colorful guppies, barbs, and bettas housed in roomy tanks instead of cramped cups. Reviewers love the running stock list the store keeps, so you know when a particular species lands. On the saltwater side you'll find corals and well-priced frags alongside reef inverts and eye-catching marine fish — clownfish, emperor angelfish, and specimens regulars say they've never seen anywhere else.

If you're hunting green neon tetras or cherry shrimp for sale in Malden, MA, this is one of the few independent shops near me that reliably keeps them in stock, and buying in person lets you check a fish's condition before you commit. The store also carries higher-end gear that's uncommon among local fish shops, including UNS rimless tanks, and can track down brands it doesn't keep on hand. Some of the freshwater plants are even sourced from Dustin's Fish Tanks.

What customers return for, though, is the people. Staff like Andy, Alex, and Marty are repeatedly singled out for patient, hands-on help — walking newcomers through filtration, stocking questions like apistos versus Bolivian rams, plant selection, and water chemistry, and even fielding phone calls to troubleshoot a sick fish. As with any livestock purchase, it's worth asking about an animal's arrival date and running your own quarantine at home.

For face-to-face aquarium expertise that big-box pet stores simply can't match, European Aquatics is a genuine Boston-metro standout.

  • “I neglected to check this shop out for too long--it's really a hidden gem. Their running stock list is so helpful to know when to stop by to check out particular species. I was excited to pick up a school of green neon tetras. Because they are pretty sensitive to shipping, I was glad to buy them in person and see their condition before committing. I was impressed by the variety of species for sale in a pretty small shop--they make the most of the space and it's very inviting. They carry a selection of rimless tanks, too, from high-end brands like UNS which is pretty uncommon for the local fish shops here in Boston. The staff was friendly and eager to answer questions. I will certainly be back in the future when I'm ready to stock some new projects!”

  • “stopped by to browse some cherry shrimp and see the variety of fish, and was very pleased with my experience. All the tanks were very clean and well taken care of, with one side being freshwater and one being saltwater, along with a nice selection of aquarium wood and rocks and an aquatic plants tank for all your aqua-scaping needs. Although this is a smaller scale shop, it is very clean and organized with a very experienced team member on hand. Definitely the go-to place for fish/aquatic hobbyists in the area!”

  • “Came back after my 21 gal cycled to buy some neons and Marty was SO kind and helpful, giving advice on whether I can stock cories (reg vs pygmies), how many otos or tetras, and whether an apisto vs Bolivian ram vs gourami would work as a centerpiece fish (he recommended an apisto). Was able to return a piece of driftwood for store credit. Bringing home 8 neons today and will be back for otos and/or cories this summer! The saltwater section is awesome too, a bunch of fish I’ve never seen before”

  • “Got back into aquariums recently and this place had everything I needed. UNS tanks are reasonably priced and are the same as Buceplant's. Really cool that some of their freshwater plants are sourced from Dustin's Fish tanks!”

  • “I had great costumer service, very friendly and educational, one of the employees is very nice and has lots of knowledge on the aqutic world. Highly recommend from fish keepers! Pretty sure it was the owner but I thank him with all of my heart bc I cant buy shrimp in my state so very helpful.”

  • “TL;DR: If the fish you get is healthy then everything is fine, but if it has problems, be ready for them to deny responsibility. I never write reviews like this. I am writing this from anger, sadness, and disappointment. Please excuse my tone. I have been a loyal customer at this store for over a year. I have purchased freshwater fish, shrimp, saltwater fish, inverts, and coral frags here. I’ve spent hundreds of dollars and visited so frequently that the owner and staff know my face. I often ask for their advice and share what’s going on in my tank. I respected their expertise. In the past, when I had issues—like shrimp dying due to my own water parameters or an Amazon puffer that didn’t make it—I took the loss and never complained because I respect the hobby and the business. That changed recently when I bought a clownfish. It died within a week. Worse than just losing the new fish, it carried something (likely Velvet) that infected my existing clownfish, which barely survived and only recovered after I performed a freshwater dip. When I brought the dead fish back, I expected at least a convo. Instead I was met with excuses. While the employee asked for a water sample, the owner basically declined to even look further into this at it, immediately suggesting my other clownfish could’ve have been "aggressive" toward the new one. That was a poor excuse to avoid responsibility over a $20 fish. My water was perfect (I keep a bunch of inverts (sensitive ones like sea urchin) and even SPS corals. And there were zero signs of aggression—only signs of disease which spread to my tank. I have heard the owner talk about how online businesses are hurting his store. I chose to shop here, often paying higher prices than online, because I believed in supporting small businesses and thought that face-to-face relationships meant better accountability. I was wrong. Most reputable online vendors have a refund window beyond the live-arrival guarantee. I have looked past seeing Ich, pests, and cyano in their display tanks, thinking keeping the store must’ve been hard and I never asked if they medicates their fish. But I realized now that this store is great until there is a problem. The moment you need them to stand behind their livestock—even if you are a loyal regular—you are on your own. I’m willing to come back to this store if they reach out to resolve this issue. But until then, let my sad experience be a warning sign to others.”
