About
Tucked away in Kingston, Massachusetts with easy parking behind the building, Lovely Pets Aquarium is a family-owned shop that regulars happily drive 45 minutes or more to reach, passing chain pet stores along the way. Owners Steve and Marlea have built their reputation on genuine care — for the livestock and for the people who walk through the door — and longtime customers like Dom Grasso describe coming back years later to set up a new tank and being patiently walked through the whole process all over again. The store fits a remarkable amount into a compact space.
Rows of clean, well-lit tanks hold a deep freshwater selection: ember tetras, bristlenose and raphael catfish, plecos, bettas, and comet goldfish, alongside live aquatic plants and striking pieces of driftwood that aquascapers comb through. The saltwater side is just as compelling, which is part of why this reads as a full aquarium store — live corals, an octopus, and other marine creatures keep visitors lingering at the glass. If you're hunting for healthy freshwater fish or invertebrates for sale in Kingston, MA, this is the kind of independent shop that's hard to replace.
Free water testing on every visit is a signature here, and the staff's fish-health knowledge runs deep. One recent customer brought in a comet goldfish with tail rot and left with KanaPlex on the staff's recommendation; within a single dose the fish was already regrowing its tail. That same hands-on guidance covers compatibility questions, betta and snail care, and special orders for anything not on the shelf.
The atmosphere is part of the draw — peaceful, welcoming, and presided over by a beloved resident shop cat. Pricing is generally considered fair, though not every tank is labeled, so expect the occasional surprise at the register. For South Shore aquarists who want healthy livestock, real expertise, and corals and freshwater fish near me without the big-box runaround, Lovely Pets Aquarium is worth the trip.

Customer reviews
“Super knowledgeable staff and great selection. They’re stocked with most everything you’d need to care for you fishes and your tanks.”
— Kevin Glynn5.06 days ago“Great selection, excellent customer service. I built a tank years ago and their employees walked me through the whole process. After a few years away from owning a tank they’re helping me do it all over again. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff! Would highly recommend!!”
— Dom Grasso5.02 weeks ago“My son and I have a comet goldfish that we have literally raised since it was a baby who developed tail rot. I had ordered maracyn 2, but when it was taking a little too long to arrive and the condition was getting worse I decided to try lovely pets to see if they had a second option. The staff suggested kanaplex which was explained is even more potent than maracyn. First dose the fish is already growing stubs of its tail again and still has 2 more doses to go. I plan to stop by and thank them personally later this week. They saved our rapidly declining fish! If you haven't checked them out I would strongly urge you do do so.”
— Bill Berka5.03 weeks ago“Knowledgeable, friendly, and happy to answer all of our many questions about caring for our betta, snails, and other small aquarium creatures. Definitely our go-to!”
— Alex Grillo5.02 months ago“I’ll be going this For over 25 years this is a comment to Samaraha ? Who left the one star before leaving a nasty review which seems like you have no idea what you’re talking about I would call Steve or his wife and talk it out. This place is the most friendliest place in the planet. They’ll answer any questions and go above and beyond I have had saltwater fish die and he’s more than likely to help me with the refund or suggest another Fish anybody that does not leave A five star feedback About this place, you are completely ignorant or you have a clue about Fish and you blaming somebody instead of yourself because these people will go above and beyond to fix it !!!!!!”
— anthony andrews plush fan5.03 months ago“Owner is hella rude and thinks she’s entitled. Wouldn’t ever do business with this place.”
— Bozz Don1.03 months ago“Every tank in the store looks well cared for and every fish I bought always lives longer than the same fish from a national chain. Their selection is better as well. Everyone I talk to is friendly and knowledgeable. I drive 45 minutes each way to get there and pass 3 or 4 chain stores on the way. Definitely worth the trip!”
— Dave LaCivita5.03 months ago“Great people, great service, great insights 11/10”
— Jon Robbins5.03 months ago“Great store, lots to see with very reasonable prices. The staff was friendly and inviting. Ended up getting a beautiful pleco and a raphael catfish.”
— Chris5.03 months ago“I have a 75 gal and had 15 beautiful African cichlids that I bought from a different fish store and had them for a couple years. Decided to buy a new addition from this place. An albino cichlid that had ick so bad I couldn’t tell because of the lighter colored fish. Should have quarantined him. Within of couple weeks of adding the new fish all my fish got ick and all of them passed away within a month. This place is not clean and they’re clearly just in the business for profit without a car for the hobby. Check out OSA in Coventry, RI or Uncle Ned’s in Millis. Worth the drive much better selections. They stand by what they sell unlike this abysmal mom and pop shop in Kingston”
