About
Fish Nook Pet Center sits along the highway in Acton, Massachusetts, and has been a neighborhood fixture long enough that customers recall buying guinea pigs there as children. It's a full-service pet shop with a decidedly aquatic focus, stocking both freshwater tropical and saltwater marine fish alongside small animals, reptiles, and birds. The freshwater side draws steady traffic.
Reviewers mention a solid variety of community fish, freshwater plants, and the supplies to set up a planted tank from scratch. One customer described the shop as "very complete" for freshwater aquarium needs. Bettas are a popular pick — one buyer noted their Fish Nook betta outlasted any big-box-store fish by a wide margin.
There's also at least one koi on-site, and saltwater hobbyists rely on the store for marine livestock and regular water testing. A reviewer who keeps saltwater tanks praised the staff's ability to diagnose issues on the spot. Used tanks are a notable draw.
Fish Nook regularly stocks secondhand aquariums at approachable prices, and one customer recently picked up a 125-gallon setup with hands-on help from staff member Nick, who assisted with loading and advice. Special orders are accommodated as well, giving shoppers access to livestock or supplies not typically on the shelf. The staff — Sean and Nick are frequently name-checked — earn praise for practical problem-solving.
One long-frustrated fishkeeper described months of battling algae with products recommended elsewhere, only to have Fish Nook suggest a single fix that cleared the water within an hour. That kind of targeted advice keeps people coming back. It's worth noting that some recent reviews raise concerns about tank cleanliness and animal care conditions, and a few buyers reported fish health issues after purchase.
Prices tend to run higher than chain stores, which is typical for an independent shop but worth factoring in. For Acton-area aquarists who value face-to-face expertise and locally sourced livestock, Fish Nook remains a go-to — especially for freshwater setups, water testing, and finding a deal on a preowned tank.

“The employees are always happy to help and even assist with special orders. We have acquired most of our "zoo" from them. They are also a great place to get affordable secondhand tanks for a starter setup or a preowned upgrade. I'll certainly continue shopping here and keeping it local!”

I remember it well- I bought my guinea pig when I was a kiddo there. Yesterday, I was absolutely sickened by the disgusting fish tanks that were growing algae on the sides and the dead fish that scattered the bottom of a lot of the tanks. The rodents were stuck in tiny cages and were desperately trying to climb out or access water. Someone trusted their dear rabbit to board at this facility and even he looked checked out. I wouldn't give this shop a red cent. Shop elsewhere!!!!!!”
