About
Optimum Aquarium has spent roughly two decades earning the kind of reputation that has hobbyists driving 45 minutes or more to reach its doors in Kennesaw, GA. Walk in and you find a genuinely large floor split between a strong reef and saltwater section and a freshwater inventory that regulars say keeps getting better. The saltwater side stays stocked with corals, live rock, copepods, and hybrid clownfish, and the shop keeps fresh saltwater mixed and ready in both Red Sea and Instant Ocean, so reef keepers can grab water on their way home.
One recent visitor called it the cleanest saltwater shop in town, and the bright, well-kept display tanks back that up. On the freshwater side, cichlids are a point of pride; longtime customers describe fish that grow into genuine show-stoppers. You will also find neon danios, Corydoras, bettas, shrimp, and axolotls, plus some of the healthiest aquarium plants in the greater Atlanta area at fair prices.
The driftwood and natural stone selection is a real standout for aquascapers, and a small reptile and amphibian section adds snakes, lizards, and spiders for keepers of non-conventional pets. Saltwater corals and freshwater fish are for sale in Kennesaw, GA alongside Seachem, Fritz, and Dr. Tim's dry goods, tanks, heaters, and fish food.
What brings people back is the staff. Owner Greg, his son Grayson, and team members like Nick and Garrett take time to walk newcomers through the nitrogen cycle, help a kid pick a first betta, set up a first nano tank, and test water samples on the spot when something goes wrong. They will even track down hard-to-find freshwater fish for customers who ask.
For aquarists searching for an aquarium store near me in the Kennesaw and northwest Atlanta corridor, Optimum Aquarium remains a well-stocked, deeply knowledgeable home base for both freshwater and reef pursuits.

Customer reviews
“Great store with super knowledgeable staff. Everyone is helpful and there is plenty of supplies to help craft your aquariums”
— Papa Wheelie5.0a day ago“Picked up water for saltwater aquarium. Nice shop. Has both red sea and instant ocean water. Great tank options. Nice fish and corals.”
— Scott Biddulph5.06 days ago“I purchased 2 blonde African dwarf frogs and within 72 hours they were both dead. I called the store and they said there was nothing they could do except test my tank water and they only offer refunds if what you purchased dies within 24 hours. I have my own water testing kit and my parameters were great. I check them regularly. I decided to give the store another chance and purchased 3 nerite snails a few weeks later. Again, within 72 hours 2/3 of them were dead. It goes without saying that I made sure to acclimate everyone before adding to any tank. It’s frustrating that the store takes no accountability and that you only have a 24 hour period of hoping your wetpet survives and after that, your SOL. I really had high hopes for this store. It’s very clear they are thriving due to the demand in Kennesaw, and there being very little other options available.”
— Catie Liley2.0a week ago“They know what they’re doing, talking about and dealing with! I recommend coming here for your aquatic babies or even reptiles instead of “fast pet stores”. I bought a money plant from PetSmart and my tank got infected with pest snails and took months to get rid of it. The only way I had to fully get rid of them was to empty out the entire tank and transfer my fish to a temporary tank and set up their main one all over again. Is optimum aquarium a little bit pricier than PetSmart and Petco, yes but you get what you pay for!”
— Kenny “Kani” Paris5.02 weeks ago“Great place! So much cool stuff to see. Always busy”
— Casey Lance5.04 weeks ago“Best fish store in Atlanta, great staff as well.”
— Fabian Larsson5.0a month ago“Cleanest saltwater shop in town!!”
— Craig Bredahl5.0a month ago“Many thanks to Nick for taking the time to help me get setup with my first nano fish tank. He made sure that we selected the right amount of fish, shrimp, and plants. So far our setup hasn't failed us. He was very knowledgeable about the different species and showed some passion in his job. I say this because I have spoke to other employees there, and they don't have as much enthusiasm. Will definitely keep this as our go to supply since their prices are comparable to the big name box stores.”
— Richard Antonio5.0a month ago“Very helpful staff and plenty of stuff for "non conventional" pets”
— Clem5.0a month ago“Great source for fish, sopplies and HELP.”
