Tucked away in Blackshear, Georgia, Addictive Aquatics has become a lifeline for aquarium hobbyists across rural South Georgia who would otherwise face long drives to chain pet stores. The shop stocks both freshwater and saltwater fish, corals, and reef supplies, along with a surprisingly diverse roster of animals including axolotls, reptiles like leopard geckos, turtles, birds, hamsters, and guinea pigs. The freshwater side draws a loyal following.
Customers have built planted tanks with schools of tetras and guppies under the staff's guidance, and one enthusiast credits Addictive Aquatics with transforming a neglected goldfish setup into a thriving planted ecosystem complete with frogs. Peacock cichlids are among the favorites, with at least one devoted customer running three large tanks stocked from the shop. On the saltwater side, the store carries corals and reef supplies compelling enough that one visitor admitted they saw "another coral reef salt tank" in their future after browsing the inventory.
Staff members like Brenslie earn consistent praise for their willingness to walk customers through fish care, tank compatibility, and proper acclimation. The shop philosophy leans toward responsible pet ownership — employees reportedly won't just bag up whatever you point at, but instead make sure you understand what's needed to keep your new pets healthy. The store also carries live and frozen feeders, crustaceans, snails, and small mammals, making it a genuine one-stop shop for the region.
That said, some customers have experienced fish losses shortly after purchase, and the store's no-guarantee policy on livestock has frustrated a few buyers. Staffing can occasionally feel thin, with one employee juggling multiple customers during busy periods. For aquarium enthusiasts in the Waycross, Valdosta, and broader South Georgia corridor, Addictive Aquatics fills a real gap.
The knowledgeable ownership, diverse livestock, and community-minded approach — including active Facebook updates on new arrivals — keep customers making the drive back to Blackshear again and again.

We have shopped here on several occasions - we had had an incident happen a few years back and was disappointed in their customer service but decided to give Addictive Aquatics another try. We purchased some guppies from them a few weeks back and all went well. We followed the instructions about transferring the first and all. We decided to add a few more females to balance out the ratio. The young man working both times was super helpful and knowledgeable. He went above and beyond to share info and even answer my boys' questions about other fish that they were curious about. On Saturday, we went and purchased 7 guppies. On Sunday we found 2 dead of those fish (they were slightly different coloring than what we had so we knew it was the new fish). Each day has been another one of the 7. So far we are totally 4 fish dead. I immediately emailed them on Monday to see what could be done. No reply. My husband called on Tuesday since we knew they were closed Mondays. Voicemail. I tried back today and the young man was very polite but said there are no guarantees on their fish. Which I understand they can't guarantee how long a fish will live, however when you have an existing tank, where fish are doing very well and you introduce 7 new ones (correctly) and they are slowly dying off, it makes me wonder what could cause this. So maybe they can't give a full refund but I would think giving a guarantee for a few days and maybe even 50 percent back or something. Unfortunately, we will have to find a place that has even a week guarantee but I can't drop $50 on fish that are going to last a couple days.

I love this place! Addictive is a very accurate name! If you're from rural South Georgia you don't have a lot of options besides chain pet stores so even though it's an hour drive, I frequent this store exclusively for my aquarium needs. They are very knowledgeable and full of advice and recommendations. With their help I've went from someone with cheap goldfish and a dirty tank to a planted, clean tank with schools of different fishes and a few frogs! I follow their regular posts on Facebook so I can see what I may want to purchase next or just look at all the pretty fishies!

Hello! I used to love this place until a facebook post of a hermit crab with a painted shell. It’s likely still posted. Painted shells are extremely toxic to hermit crabs, and no paint is okay! Paint can even chip and they can ingest it, which is also very harmful. When I pointed this out they replied back saying that the paint they use is okay. I put a mad reaction on as many others already did (they were agreeing with what I stated) so on their comment back to me, and the post itself. I do NOT have pictures of this as I didn’t expect them to then block me after. A few minutes or so from their Facebook page. I will always gather pictures for sure now. I absolutely love local shops but that’s no excuse to know you’re doing wrong and not correct it. Shells are only painted for our enjoyment which is so sad. It’s nothing wrong to give them a proper natural shell. I have no hate towards this place, I just wish they would do something about it. I will never go to this place again, however. Unless they realize the issue.

Cannot overstate how amazing this shop is! Everyone is so knowledgeable and helpful- I can't say how many times I've had very specific questions and had such helpful answers and explanations were given. My fish are thriving and my tank is a whole little ecosystem thanks to everyone here! The biggest thing is this shop wants you to have pets that will thrive. They don't just send you on your way with whatever you want, they make sure you'll be able to take care of your pet, and that you'll know what to do.
