Something's Fishy sits in Miami's North Beach area as one of the few dedicated aquarium shops serving local hobbyists, and it sparks strong opinions. Owner Kay runs the operation with a hands-on approach — multiple reviewers describe him walking newcomers through their first tank setup, offering daily check-ins when fish fall ill, and candidly advising customers against purchases that won't work for their setup. That level of personal investment has earned him a loyal following among Miami fishkeepers.
The store stocks both freshwater and saltwater tropical fish, with reviewers consistently noting a selection of rare and exotic species not found at chain pet stores. Corals, clown plecos, blue crayfish, snails, and various reef tank inhabitants fill the tanks alongside a range of dry goods and medications that customers say are hard to find elsewhere. Several hobbyists specifically credit the store's unique livestock as a major draw, calling the variety unmatched in the Miami area.
That said, Something's Fishy is a polarizing shop. Some customers report exceptional experiences — Kay guiding them through saltwater tank setup, diagnosing sick fish over the phone, and building genuine relationships with repeat visitors. Others describe feeling rushed, encountering brusque phone interactions, and dealing with livestock health issues after purchase.
The store offers no guarantee on fish, which has frustrated buyers who lost animals shortly after bringing them home. Tank cleanliness in-store has also drawn mixed commentary, with some noting beneficial bacteria buildup and others seeing neglect. Pricing splits opinion too: many find the costs reasonable for the quality and rarity of fish offered, while others feel the markup is steep compared to alternatives.
The limited hours — particularly closing earlier than posted — have also been a recurring complaint from working hobbyists trying to visit after their shifts. For Miami fishkeepers willing to build a relationship with a knowledgeable independent owner, Something's Fishy delivers a livestock selection and personalized guidance that big-box stores simply cannot match. Just know what you're walking into: a one-man-band shop where the experience depends heavily on the day and the rapport you build with Kay.

I’m new to the hobby and lucky that I met Kay (the owner). He is always helpful and give me best advise. Unlike other stores he doesn’t try to sell you anything but rather wants you to succeed and often tells you what you shouldn’t buy and why. I trust him and that’s the reason why you should shop there imo

Bought 2 clown plecos. One died the next day. Called regarding guarantee. They have no guarantee for livestock so be careful when purchasing from this fish store.

Something’s Fishy is a great store with friendly and helpful staff. The worker took the time to answer my questions and gave great advice. The fish tanks might look a little dirty at first, but it’s clear they’re well-maintained with beneficial bacteria that’s good for the fish. It’s a great place for anyone who loves fishkeeping.
