About
Tucked onto a Seattle side street, Aquarium Zen feels less like a pet shop and more like a living gallery — reviewers routinely compare it to a botanical garden or an aquatic museum, and more than one admits to losing hours just staring into the tanks. Owner Steve and his crew have built a freshwater fish store where every aquarium, right down to the sale tanks, is scaped as a lush planted display. Longtime regulars single out Audrey and "the lady with glasses" as especially patient with first-timers and their endless questions.
The shop's reputation rests on aquascaping and freshwater planted tanks. The live plant selection is enormous, with tissue cultures and a rotating cast of aquatic species that arrive healthy and richly colored. Hardscape fills the rest: driftwood in several varieties, dried cacao pods, and a deep range of rocks and minerals, often priced below the big-box stores.
Equipment leans premium — ADA lines, lights, fertilizers, and fish food sit alongside the livestock — and staff will happily talk a beginner through a full build, paludarium included. The fish themselves draw devotees. Bettas come in large planted jars with botanicals instead of plastic cups; one keeper's new betta arrived so enriched it had already built a bubble nest in the store.
Shrimp hobbyists find vibrant stock, including high-grade Bloody Mary shrimp, and the rotating lineup of unique and rare fish for sale in Seattle, WA keeps regulars dropping in to see what's new. One reviewer calls it the only real option for healthy freshwater fish in the Puget Sound region. The space is compact and kept tropical-warm, so plan to shed a layer, and the hours run limited.
Still, for anyone serious about freshwater aquascaping near me in the Pacific Northwest, Aquarium Zen is the standard — and even non-aquarists tend to leave with a plant they love.

Customer reviews
“This store basically inspired me to build an aquarium and supplies most of my aquarium needs (including fish, plants, and some rocks). Every employee here is helpful and responsive to my extensive questions. Highly recommend to anyone in Seattle, even if you don't own fish”

— Christopher Palazzo5.05 days ago“*EDIT: In response to the owner: I am sorry you do not wish to take my feedback. I provided 2 of the most extreme examples to set the tone. There is plenty that is priced much higher for the greater Seattle area to include Renton and Kirkland. I am giving my honest opinion. If I listed every single item that I found fault with, I feel like that would be an emotional review and not one based on a level headed opinion. Thank you for your response. Pricing is outrageous. 4.99 for a RAMSHORN snail. That's right. The pest species that plagues tanks. Also, 8.99 for an individual 6 inch strand of hornwort, not even a small bundle. Their variety of rare fish is very cool. I will give them that. Anything that is anything close to standard or more common aquarium fish have a wild mark up even beyond other local mom and pop shops. I still can't get over trying to charge 4.99 for an individual ramshorn snail. My gripes are not from a single visit. This review comes from a series of frustrating interactions. Go check them out, but I won't be back.”

— Terry Wilson1.0a week ago“Best Aquascape store in Seattle!! All of the staff are highly knowledgeable and helpful, everytime I visit, I have an amazing experience; weather browsing or making a purchase!”
— James Klinedinst5.0Edited 2 weeks ago“Not very friendly; there was no sign indicating it was a self-checkout, so I stood there for 5 minutes waiting for help. More plants than fish.”
— Serge3.03 weeks ago“Go here. Stop reading, and go. But if you require more convincing, here is a little insight - my two cents, if you will... This place is a gem. One of those few remaining local businesses that hasn't been priced out of an an increasingly gentrified and corporate landscape. See, whole foods, guitar center (their respective counterparts... Beautiful aquascapes, filled with interesting creatures and only live plants. The beginner and experienced aquarists will both enjoy Aquarium Zen, and will be met with an extremely knowledgeable, friendly and helpful staff who clearly are passionate about what they do and posses an intimate knowledge of everything they sell. Even non-aquarists will find something here they can bring home and love. Like I said before, go here. Now ! 🙃”
— Mno Jkl5.0a month ago“Wonderful fish, excellent selection of plants. Read other reviews for that. My reason for two stars: while I never expected to have to rehome my fish, the situation unfortunately arose. In doing my research prior, I read that most local fish stores were extremely accepting to rehoming fish. I set up a 20g tank in September 2025. Sadly, some significant life events occurred and in December 2025, I realized I was not going to be able to maintain the aquarium. I sent Aquarium Zen emails in December 2025, March 2026, and May 2026 asking them if they might be able to help me out by taking back the fish, or if not, if they could let me know what options I might have available to me, as I was overwhelmed with sadness and emotion. Aquarium Zen . . . never responded. In a separate, earlier email, when they overcharged me and I happened to catch it after looking at my receipt, I emailed and they responded immediately. But when I reached out for them to help me while I was terrified about what might happen to my fish . . . they displayed complete apathy. These were fish and plants that I bought from Aquarium Zen. They could have responded "We are so sorry this is happening, but we simply can't help." I would have accepted that. But to ignore me repeatedly, three times, when I reached out for help . . . I just don't know what to say. I did eventually get my fish rehomed, but the fact that they ignored me repeatedly is something I can never get over. I do plan to get back into fishkeeping once I've navigated my health challenges, but I will never go back to Aquarium Zen.”
