Animal Ark in Orem, Utah is a sprawling independent pet store that draws visitors with its sheer variety — reptiles, arachnids, birds, small mammals, and a notable freshwater fish section that keeps aquarium hobbyists coming back. Walk in and you'll find tanks stocked with tropical freshwater fish of all kinds, aquarium snails, live plants (including some genuinely rare specimens that plant collectors rave about), and axolotls that catch the eye of amphibian enthusiasts. The fish department offers a broad selection, though several reviewers note that pricing runs higher than competing local shops and big-box stores.
That said, the livestock variety is hard to match in the Orem area — customers report finding species and supplies here that aren't available at any other local pet shop. The store also carries substrates and dry goods at prices that can actually beat Petco, so it pays to comparison shop. Staff members like store manager Emily earn consistent praise for their animal knowledge and willingness to answer questions in depth, even when a customer isn't ready to buy.
One reviewer highlighted a custom crested gecko vivarium built by an employee named Sammy, suggesting the team can handle specialized build-outs beyond standard off-the-shelf setups. The store's atmosphere is polarizing. Some visits reveal a clean, well-organized shop; others catch it mid-cycle between cleanings, with hard water stains on glass and enclosures that could use attention.
Multiple reviewers describe the animal care as having improved significantly under Emily's management, though concerns about enclosure sizes — particularly for axolotls, birds, and small mammals — come up repeatedly. Ownership practices under owner Mike have drawn pointed criticism, with several customers recounting stories of aggressive markup and questionable sourcing. It's a tension that runs through many reviews: genuinely helpful staff and hard-to-find animals on one side, ethical concerns and premium pricing on the other.
For freshwater fishkeepers, plant collectors, and axolotl fans in Utah County, Animal Ark Orem remains one of the most diverse independent options around — just go in with eyes open and prices compared.

These people charge 45 cents for a "medium" roach, and sometimes you'll ask why they're so small they'll always get angry with you and say that's all they have right now til they order more online. They never get more online, that's their grift. People with reptiles in Orem only have Animal Ark to go to for immediate food, Animal Ark knows it, so they gouge their loyal customers. 75 cents for a somewhat large roach is absolutely insane. These people are evil.

I've seen a lot with Animal Ark over the years. It's had it's ups and downs, and a change of ownership. Currently, their care of the animals is really good. EMILY is the store manager and she has brought the store to a whole new level over the last several years. They have. Stepped. It. Up! It's really awesome to have a store where you can get such a wide variety of reptiles, amphibians, bugs, and arachnids, and the knowledge from the employees to care for them! The store can get pretty dirty, and you might walk in and see the place really messy. It's thrown me off a few times, but I've had multiple occasions where I come back the next day or some time within the next week and suddenly the store is completely *spotless*. So I've relaxed a lot when I do see things getting messy. I also understand how intense upkeep labor is for pet stores, having worked in one myself. SAMMY made me a custom crested gecko vivarium and it was awesome! If you love RARE PLANTS, this is the place to go! Their plant collection is incredible. If you are a plant conessoir, go here! Be warned, rare plants get pricey. The owner though, MIKE, is a real cheapskate and makes some really ethically sketchy decisions! He marks everything up a few dollars more than all of the other local home owned pet stores in the area. If you're a local supplier selling animals, reptiles, fish, birds, etc., he's gonna try and screw you and he'll make offers so low that it's a joke. He's been known to lie to sellers on KSL saying he's buying the pet(s) for his family, wife, and kids, and then takes them to his store and sells them for outrageous prices instead. He does get a lot of these animals from random people on KSL, so you really don't know anything about the health or history of the animal. That's the risk with every pet store though. You can get some amazing products and some great advice from good and knowledgeable staff, especially Emily, but supporting Mike's sketchy business ethics when you give them business can be a tough dilemma, because they deliver on so many great fronts but you hate support bad business ethics.

I do not feel the animals are adequately taken care of at all. Very unclean environment. They have puppies and kittens in small glass areas. Last time I was there there was a little puppy and the cork board behind him had been chewed to death and it didn’t look clean and was such a small space!! The birds are also severally overcrowded and in cages that are way too small. This place is highly unethical and needs to change their practices. I would not ever ever ever buy something here. Not to mention how insanely overpriced everything is. I hope they go out of business or change their practices to clean ethical treatment of the animals.

It was better when the girl that actually cared about customers was there. The other individuals kinda suck..
