About

True to its name, The Big Little Fish Store packs a remarkable amount of life into a compact Dallas storefront — small in footprint, but deep in the kind of healthy, well-kept livestock that keeps local hobbyists coming back. Regulars describe immaculately clean tanks, thoughtful displays, and a staff whose passion for the hobby shows in every detail. ' This is an aquarium store that covers a lot of ground.

On the freshwater side, it has built a name for hard-to-find cichlids — Electric Blue Texas cichlids, peacock cichlids, red jewel cichlids, and lemon Oscars, including an Oscar one customer called the only one of its kind in all of DFW. Shrimp keepers have made it a destination too: it's a go-to spot for Amano shrimp for sale in Dallas, TX, alongside assassin snails, thriving hornwort, and other plants and critters for stocking a planted tank. The saltwater side holds its own, with corals and marine fish available in Dallas, TX for reef-minded aquarists.

What truly sets the shop apart is the service. The manager is known for diagnosing tank problems on the spot and walking customers through setups so they're 'set up for success' rather than upsold. A tattooed staffer earns repeat shout-outs for going above and beyond, and a recent shopper hunting for plants stayed just to soak up advice.

The store also has a soft spot for the hobby itself — famously rehoming a beloved sucker fish named Dave when his owner had to move. It's not the biggest tropical selection in the metroplex, and the space is cozy, but for healthy fish, expert guidance, and aquarium plants near me, this independent Dallas fish store has earned genuine, lasting loyalty among local aquarists.

  • “Wanted to get into saltwater fish and start my first tank, made the mistake of coming here first, waited around for someone to finally come into the main area of the shop to help me with wasn’t a problem at first so I could look and start getting an understanding of what they had to offer. The problem came when he finally came out to talk to me, I’m assuming this is the assistant manager or something the way other people on here have described but I continued anyway telling him how I was brand new and wanted to start a small-medium size tank to start learning. He then points to a 3k tank and said “size is relative some people think this is small” like guy come on let’s realistic for a second in your life. I just finished explaining how was brand new and wanting something basic to start out to learn what I’m doing to see if I even fully enjoy it first he then goes on to explain to me. Why shouldn’t start out small why should have to buy the most expensive things in that I just be wasting my time starting out with a 20 to 40 gallon tank beyond that they didn’t have much selections for tank only some old used tanks for overpriced they only had two selections of small tanks, which were only about 15 gallons max highly recommend. Do not go to the store unless you’re just going to pick up a fish that you see interesting I would suggest North Dallas aquarium. They are very knowledgeable. I went there next. They got me set up with a full tank everything I needed. They had a wide selection of tanks filters all in one tanks with everything anything you could need there.”
