About

Tucked into Grants Pass, Oregon, Darr's Aquatics has become the freshwater fish store that serious hobbyists across the Rogue Valley plan their weekends around. Owners Christian and Brooke run the shop themselves, and their hands-on passion for fishkeeping is the first thing customers mention — they'll patiently walk a first-time tank owner through every step of a setup, then turn around and talk dwarf puffer diets or plant compatibility with a seasoned aquarist. One newer hobbyist credited the crew with not just getting him into the hobby, but keeping him in it.

The selection is where this place earns its reputation. Alongside rotating tropicals, community fish, and bettas, Christian sources oddball and rare species that customers say they couldn't find anywhere else they've lived — one recent shopper drove home with a hard-to-find Carinotetraodon irrubesco puffer, some Cory catfish, and a few plants, all healthy and settling in fast. In the back, piranhas and oversized catfish draw repeat visitors just to see what's new, while crustaceans and snails round out the livestock.

Amano shrimp — notoriously hard to source locally — are available in Grants Pass, OR at prices that genuinely surprise people. The live plant selection has converted more than a few skeptics into planted-tank enthusiasts, and the shop usually keeps aquascaping stone on hand for hardscapes. Fresh stock tends to arrive on Mondays, so regulars time their visits accordingly.

Reviewers keep noting the same things: the tanks are spotless, the fish are vibrant, and stock bought here survives and thrives far longer than big-box alternatives. If you're hunting for freshwater fish, live plants, or shrimp for sale near you in Southern Oregon, Darr's Aquatics is the local family business where curious newcomers and obsessed hobbyists alike end up — fish food, supplies, and patient advice included. Stop in, see what came in this week, and bring your questions.

  • “Great store to work with. Only pleasant and positive experiences with Darr's Aquatics.”

  • “I really wanted to love this shop. I drove 45 minutes to Darr’s specifically to support a local business and find a healthy betta from a responsible source. While I appreciate that they exist in a world of chain stores, I feel it is important to share my experience: the betta rack was in very poor condition. Many of the fish appeared unwell, and there were several deceased fish in the tanks. When I mentioned this to the clerk, they acknowledged that they knew the rack was having issues and suggested they might just stop carrying them. It was disheartening to hear that they are knowingly selling compromised animals. I ended up purchasing a betta that was clamped from the start and did not survive, despite my best efforts to provide a good home. As a newer hobbyist, I was also hoping for some guidance, but the interaction felt rushed and transactional. I had hoped to become a regular customer, but this experience has made me wary. I truly hope they address the health issues on that rack and pause sales until their livestock is healthy again. It’s a nice shop, but I cannot recommend buying bettas there at this time.”

  • “This is a great place for tropical fish and advice. The crew is knowledgeable and have been instumental in not only getting me into the hobby, but keeping me in it as well. Its a great place to go.”

  • “This is THE place to go to for anything freshwater aquarium related, basically from the California border Medford- and I only stop there because I haven't checked out many aquarium stores beyond that. The owner has an incredible depth of knowledge and passion for fish, I'm certain he could tell you whatever you needed to know, or could find it easily. Has a good selection of basic fish that seems to rotate out often, as well as some RAREST oddball fish I've ever found. This guy gets fish I couldn't find anywhere else I've lived. Usually keeps some good stone in stock, only complaint is they're usually smaller peices- but I can't be mad about not having them haul a bunch of big heavy rocks to put on display either. Hopefully some day this store might start an aquarium club!”

  • “I have kept fish for around 7-8 years on and off and recently moved to the area. We have visited Darr's twice. Yesterday I purchased a few fish, including a relatively uncommon puffer. (Carinotetraodon irrubesco) Some nice plants too. I am satisfied with the selection and maintenance of the tanks. As to be expected there are issues with importing and keeping many different kinds of fish. I would place this store on par with other quality facilities and it is certainly the best choice for tropical freshwater fishkeeping in this area. I will be returning and will share updates of the plants and fish I have purchased, currently settling in very nice. Would like to note that I will be purchasing more of this puffer species, there were only two males available when I went in the other day. I would mention though that the owner was happy to cater to requests and discuss all sorts of fish. Seems like a pretty solid store to me currently, the boy puffer I received is healthy and already eating, (hunting snails) As are the corys I purchased too, healthy and schooling with others.”
