Reef Architects in Greensboro, North Carolina is the kind of family-owned fish store that people drive hours to visit — and then keep coming back. Located in the Golden Gate Shopping Center on Golden Gate Drive, this tropical fish emporium is run by Ernest and his family, including his son, who share an infectious passion for the hobby that shows in every interaction. The store carries a strong selection of both freshwater and saltwater fish, corals, invertebrates, and live plants.
Tanks throughout the shop are well-maintained and adequately sized, housing healthy livestock at reasonable prices. Whether you need a few freshwater tropicals or want to browse their coral selection, the displays are worth a slow walk through the aisles — customers note the relaxing atmosphere, complete with good music playing in the background. What truly sets Reef Architects apart is the level of personal attention.
Ernest has a reputation for spending serious time with customers, whether on the phone past closing hours or in person guiding a novice through their first 100-gallon saltwater setup. One customer came in looking for a small 20-30 gallon all-in-one countertop tank and walked out with a 65-gallon system with sump and stand after Ernest helped them realize their family's ambitions needed more room. There's no pressure — multiple reviewers describe spending an hour or more just talking fish without feeling pushed to buy anything.
The care extends to the small details: fish bagged with plenty of air, placed in styrofoam boxes for safe transport, and carried to your car. Ernest's son carries the same genuine enthusiasm, asking to see pictures of customers' home setups and showing real interest in the hobby. Customers travel from Winston-Salem, Virginia, and even Sumter, South Carolina to shop here.
7 stars, Reef Architects has earned its reputation as Greensboro's go-to destination for saltwater reef supplies, freshwater fish, and old-school fish shop hospitality.

This is a proper Fish Shop. The kind I remember from the old days, with fun, knowledge family running the show. They run a tight ship, too, with healthy livestock and reasonable prices. I'm almost an hour away in Winston Salem but I'll be back again and again.

I went into the store last week and talked with employees for abt a hr or so didn’t feel pressured to buy anything. Just talked fish as I have 10+ tanks and love fish & plants and knowledgeable ppl who have common interests. They offer everything and are respectful & seem genuine. I’ve been to every other fish store around & no other one is like this one.

Ernest was very knowledgeable and steered me in a better direction. Was looking to start a saltwater tank on a small scale 20-30 gallons AIO counter top ended up with a 65 with sump and stand had to spend a little more but with the hopes dreams of the family needed more space.

We were desperately in need of freshwater tropical fish. We went to Reef Architects for our fish. They have a great selection of fresh and salt water fish. The owner, Ernest, is extremely knowledgeable and very helpful. His store has very nice music playing and it was very relaxing to walk the aisles looking at all the fish and all the coral. Ernest was very efficient in catching the fish quickly and put them in large plastic bags with lots of air. All the bags were placed in a large a styrofoam box for a safe transport of the fish. He even carried the box out to our vehicle. The personal touch was refreshing. If you have an aquarium and are need of any assistance. Come by the store located in the Golden Gate shopping center. 2222B Golden Gate Dr, Greensboro NC 27405.

Not only does this store have everything I need with a great selection of coral and many other supplies, the customer service is top notch. I drive almost an hour to this store from Virginia because of the service is great. I went today to get a few things and remembered that I forgot to leave a review the last time I was there but I was inspired to do so by the young man that helped me there. He was super kind, courteous and knowledgeable. He showed an interest in my system and even asked to see pictures of my setup. Of course I got carried away talking about it because in the past year I built my "dream tank". He was very respectful and his personality was genuine. Come to find out it was Ernest's son. All I can say is , great job Ernest for raising a terrific young man. It's great to see "Pops" , you and your son in the store and the passion you and he have. He will be a successful man because of the strong foundation you've taught him and that is reflected in his work. Great store, great people and see you guys soon!
