Salt Water Paradise in Tonawanda, New York is a polarizing shop that inspires fierce loyalty among its saltwater regulars while leaving some first-time visitors feeling unwelcome. Run by Joe and Annette, this family-operated store has earned a reputation as one of Western New York's go-to destinations for corals and reef tank livestock. Fans describe Joe as a 'reefing legend in NYS,' and the shop's coral frags are consistently praised for being vibrant, healthy, and reasonably priced — arguably the best coral deals in the WNY region.
The store features multiple rooms stocked with a huge selection of saltwater livestock, live rock, and equipment — essentially everything needed to start or maintain a reef tank. Customers who've built a rapport with Joe and Annette describe them as genuinely passionate about getting hobbyists set up for success rather than just making a sale. One reviewer returning to the hobby after a 27-year break praised the owner for taking time to walk through everything needed for a proper saltwater setup, providing detailed guidance before encouraging a purchase.
That said, the shop has a notable pattern of mixed experiences, particularly with walk-ins and newcomers. Several reviewers report being asked to leave well before closing time, receiving no greeting, or being told they couldn't browse certain rooms because they didn't currently own a saltwater tank. Pricing transparency has also been flagged — some items reportedly lack price tags, leading to concerns about inconsistency.
For dedicated saltwater hobbyists who come prepared with questions and a genuine interest in reefing, Salt Water Paradise delivers exceptional coral selection and knowledgeable guidance at prices that undercut larger competitors. The store clearly thrives on relationships — once you're in Joe and Annette's circle, the experience shifts dramatically. If you're serious about building a reef tank in the Tonawanda or greater Buffalo area, this shop's coral inventory and hands-on expertise are worth the visit, but come ready to engage.

These guys were not helpful to us at all. The only thing they said was us was for us to leave. It seemed kind of shady in there, probably illegal fish trade.

Came in here with my kids to check it out for the first time. The second we walked in it was awkward. No greeting, plenty of awkward stares. It was 545 on a Saturday when we got there. We were in there less than 5 minutes, began walking towards the second room and were told we had to leave because they were closing. That was the only conversation they offered to us. To leave. So we did. At 5:50 on a Saturday, though hours state that they close at 6:30. Will not go back. The one star is because I can’t give a zero, so it’s for their dog. He was the only kind and approachable soul in the place.

Very rude and ignorant owners no customer service doesn’t greet you when you walk in we said hello she just looked at us we asked to go look at the other tanks and because we didn’t have a salt water tank at home she told us hurry and look what if we were trying to start one ? Just rude. I wouldn’t bother going try somewhere else.

I used to like this store but lately seems like nothing is priced. You have to ask and the price changes with whatever watch or shirt you are wearing. I don’t think I will ever go back. Go to ARC at least they are honest with prices marked.

Love this place. Joe and his wife are awesome and helpful people. If you have a question, they have an answer. HUGE selection of livestock, rock and equipment. Everything you need to start a reef tank. Every frag and fish are very vibrant and healthy! There's a reason Joe is a reefing legend in NYS.

Best place to buy corals at a reasonable price in WNY. Personal opinion but it seems like the owner is more interested in getting people into the hobby and helping them succeed rather than making a buck.
