Avalon Exotics in North Tonawanda, New York is first and foremost a reptile and exotic animal destination, but it earns a mention in the aquatics world thanks to its axolotl offerings and the stunning custom terrariums and bioactive enclosures that line its walls. This is a shop built on captive-bred animals — no wholesaler stock — and the difference shows in the health and temperament of the creatures they sell. Walk in and you'll find snakes, bearded dragons, poison dart frogs, spiders, and a rotating cast of exotic species housed in meticulously built display enclosures that double as inspiration for your own setup.
The staff — led by owner Jon — are deeply passionate about their animals and genuinely eager to share that knowledge. Customers regularly leave with not just a new pet, but a complete education on husbandry, feeding, and enclosure design. One family came in for their first bearded dragon and walked out with everything they needed and the confidence to care for it; days later, the staff remembered their son by name.
The custom terrarium work here deserves special attention. Whether it's a bioactive vivarium for dart frogs or a full setup for a snake, Avalon builds enclosures that are functional and beautiful. They stock the substrates, plants, and décor needed for bioactive builds, and they'll walk you through the process step by step.
One customer arrived needing supplies for a bioactive enclosure and left having spent less than expected — a rarity in the hobby. Avalon also serves as the go-to feeder source for reptile keepers across Western New York, with consistently healthy feeder rats that keep customers coming back exclusively. The shop hosts educational visits for homeschool groups, offering hands-on tours with their rainforest residents that leave kids (and adults) buzzing.
The store's cleanliness stands out in nearly every review — enclosures are spotless, animals appear healthy and well-socialized. For reptile and exotic pet enthusiasts in the Buffalo-Niagara region, Avalon Exotics has become the definitive destination.

Heather & John were so kind in accommodating our little homeschool group in learning about some rainforest creatures. We had a very informative mini tour and got to meet several of their exotic residents. The animals all seemed happy, healthy & well taken care of and our tour guides were friendly, patient & knowledgeable and able to answer so many kid questions! Highly recommend!

I love Avalon and their staff. My children love going in to pick up our feeders! The staff is so great with them, my 5 year old also insisted on buying one of their shirts! The fact that their animals are not sourced from wholesalers is absolutely incredible. But the best part about them is that their feeders are amazing. I refuse to purchase feeders anywhere else. Couldn’t recommend them more!

Super helpful answering my questions and helping me find some new decorations for my snake's enclosure! And their reptiles all looked incredibly healthy and happy with awesome enclosures. This is the best reptiles shop I've found in the area, I'll be going here for everything me and my snake need from now on!

I have been going to Avalon for all my reptile needs for the last few months now. One of the cleanest reptile stores I have been too, amazing selection of animals that are all healthy. Owners are super informative and helpful with all of my questions I tend to ask. Some of my nicest and best temperament animals have come from them, and my go to spot for feeder rats.

My husband took me to this shop to buy myself a pet and I got interested in buying pet Rats when I seen the Rats because I love those fuzzy lil guys, but as I looked closely there was overcrowding in the enclosures they were kept in more than 4-6 in each tank which isn't the proper way to have them contained in a pet shop or even in a home where they are kept as pet and this is something I'm highly aware of due to having experience raising rodents and caring for them...mind you the pet shop owners are so negligent they don't even keep them contained in same sex groups they mix males with females and don't even know the genders of the rats in there which made all that even more disgusting with how they treat these little guys because not keeping them in the same sex groups females with females and males with males this can cause even more overcrowding because they will breed plus there's chances of aggression resource guarding and a lot more to happen but a number one thing stress also...Some were stacked on each other some were sleep while some others looked possibly sick or dead but I couldn't tell for sure cuz they all were that bunched up so I said nothing and didn't wanna assume gave the benefit of the doubt hoping the containment was the only issue with this store...the rats I bought they look perfectly fine so I gave it the benefit of the doubt even more than I should have One guy in the shop kept talking so poor about these rats saying the rats will just willingly be eaten and have no survival instincts etc. mocking them and basically showing how he viewed them as lesser creatures that weren't important...the other guy was no different and to test to see if they were having favoritism with the animals in the shop my husband asked the other guy in the shop about spiders that they had and the guy immediately was telling a whole story to him with so much enthusiasm over those spiders but I saw no enthusiasm about any other creatures that was in there as much as this guy was so enthusiastic about the spiders...the favoritism is disgusting as hell and the attitude of the people there was also poor taste... Constantly the people shaming me for feeling bad for the Rats and having compassion and seeing them as living things I've always had compassion for smaller creatures as such being Rats and other types of Rodents they have a place in my heart and I care for them and I always enjoyed having them as companions and raising them. What was even more disgusting was how unsanitary one person who was working in the shop was constantly coughing while handling the animals coughed all over an axolotl bracelet I bought along with a shirt my husband bought we immediately sanitized all that stuff when getting home because we were both disgusted... Because of how everything turned out with my rats and how the rats are dead due to the conditions they were kept in before I even bought them I am led to now fully and strongly believe that this place is unsanitary has no regard for the safety of the other animals because they are labeled as just a resource for other animals to eat meanwhile also telling people you can buy them as pets but they view these rats so poorly and will express it in a person's face how they do in such an ill-mannered way... Who's to say somebody hasn't fed these rats to their pet and their pet hasn't gotten sick or if other people have kept them as pets like I have who's to say somebody isn't experiencing the same thing I did but they haven't left a review because they don't know how to... And I knew it was strange when they wouldn't let me interact with the rats as much when I was first buying them I wanted to interact with them when buying them because I wanted to check to make sure they were fully okay... When I took the rats home that's when I started noticing things here and there but unfortunately by the time I got to the conclusion that they truly were sick it was too late and it already set in because I've never had to deal with any of my pets ever being sick like this very disheartening

This place is incredible. The staff were so helpful in picking out everything we needed for our first dragon. Very patient and answered all of our questions. Went back a few days later, and the staff remembered my son's name and that he did not like touching receipts. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a reptile or feeder animals.

As the owner of multiple snakes, bearded dragons and frogs I rely heavily on Avalon Exotics for all of my pet’s needs. It is risky for me to remain in that store for too long because their selection is vast and terribly tempting for me. So I run in, grab what I need for my pets, and run out before I am tempted to investigate their amazing enclosures and beautiful exotic creatures. They are always well stocked with what I need, offer expert advice, answer all of my questions and are a real pleasure to interact with. Always. Most highly recommended.
