About
On a Broadway storefront that longtime locals still remember from its Petland days, The Pet Store is one of the last old-school neighborhood pet shops in New York, NY. It's a multi-animal store — birds, reptiles, and small mammals all have a corner here — but for aquarium hobbyists it's the aquatics wall that earns the trips, with some regulars coming in from as far as Queens just to see what freshwater fish are in. The freshwater selection is the heart of it.
Reviewers come for guppies and other livebearers, and one recent customer happily walked out with two discus, praising the variety of freshwater fish for sale in New York, NY at prices they called genuinely reasonable. Aquascapers single out the live plants, which one tank-keeper described as often in amazing condition and more affordable than the big-box chains — a real draw for anyone setting up a planted tank. Bettas, live feeders, and the usual aquarium products and dry goods round out a section that punches above the store's modest footprint.
The staff is what keeps people loyal. Customers name names — Jay gets thanked for being caring and knowledgeable, John has been known to let kids hold a chameleon, and the easygoing crew has a reputation for walking first-timers through an entire tank build, from equipment to live plants. When you're trying to find freshwater fish near me with this kind of hands-on, no-pressure guidance, the visit feels closer to a neighborhood institution than a chain.
It's clean, well-lit, and unpretentious — a genuine mom-and-pop shop. A handful of reviewers do flag occasional fish-health issues and tanks that can run overstocked, so it's worth visiting on a good stocking day and looking closely before you buy. But for New Yorkers who miss the era when the pet store owner knew your name, this Broadway fish store keeps that torch lit with a solid freshwater lineup and real local knowledge.

— Kim Hampton5.02 months ago“i will start by saying i only visit the aquatics section and occasionally get litter for my cats. i have several tanks and a hobby of mine is aquascaping so ive dropped by several times to get plants from here. more often than not, they were in amazing condition and very affordable compared to getting them online. id also rather support a local business than a petco. there are a lot of great things about this store. the staff is always helpful and very accommodating. theyve even ordered something for me that i needed for my cats. it's kept very tidy, as tidy as a pet store can get, haha, and the selection is fairly good (again, i mostly keep to the cat section and aquatics.) however, i would be hesitant to purchase a fish from there. regardless of where you go to shop for this hobby, seeing a dead fish or a fish with swim bladder issues will be inevitable, but my concern is with how the tanks are stocked. some tanks have species that are incompatible and others are overstocked, even for a temporary sales tank. it's a local business, but im not a businessman so i wont pretend to know how the logistics work here---its just that when i go, some of the fish look stressed and stressed fish are prone to disease. i am not discouraging anyone from getting a fish from here. i am mainly wanting to give feedback to management as i do love visiting this place and eventually hope i can come here to get my fish too.”
