About
Pete's Aquariums & Fish is a locally owned aquarium store in Fishkill, NY, where the focus stays squarely on healthy livestock and the kind of hands-on guidance that keeps Hudson Valley hobbyists coming back. The shop isn't flashy — regulars describe a no-frills space where the animals, not the decor, are the point — but the care behind the counter is what earns the loyalty. Owner Pete is repeatedly described as someone who treats you like family, and longtime customers like Christian Dixon and Buck Lewis say they won't buy their fish or corals anywhere else.
On the freshwater side, you'll find quality live plants such as Java fern alongside dependable tank mates like mystery snails — easy wins for planted tanks and betta setups, and one reviewer noted the Java fern even propagated after taking it home. The saltwater selection is where Pete's gets genuinely interesting: this is one of the rare local shops where you can find Achilles tangs, zebra moray eels, emperor, regal, and queen angels, octopuses, anemones, and corals for sale in Fishkill, NY. The marine livestock here has a reputation for being well cared for and eating readily once home, a testament to Pete's careful quarantine and acclimation practices.
Beyond fish, Pete keeps medications on hand for hobbyists battling parasitic outbreaks at home, and the staff — including Michael, praised again and again for his product knowledge — take real time to walk you through octopus tank safety, proper acclimation, and responsible care rather than pushing a quick sale. " For anyone in the Fishkill area searching for saltwater fish, corals, or hard-to-find marine species near me, Pete's is a destination fish store run by people who genuinely value the animals they sell. Pond keepers are served here too, rounding out a shop that covers freshwater, saltwater, and pond needs under one roof.

“Closed 5/5/26 until further notice. Place was empty. Drove a long way to check it out. Should have called first, but a warning on the web page is certainly in order.”

— Mike Katz1.02 months ago“Never received my order, person on phone was rude, offered no solution besides "wait longer" asked for refund never got it. Plenty of other places to buy fish”
— mike dpiazza1.02 months ago“The people here are uncommonly knowledgeable and kind. I trust every living thing they have there will be healthy and not hurt my fish if I introduce them to my tank. They seem to care about the quality of care for the fish they sell. Compared to chain stores that treat cheap fish like meaningless and easily disposable stock instead of living things and keep them in inappropriate and dangerous living conditions, it is a pleasure to give my business here to a locally owned shop that values their fish and honors that their customers actually care about the welfare of aquatic life. They give great advice to keep my little guy healthy and happy.”
— Hudson Gould5.02 months ago“Hesitant to leave a negative review based on his negative responses to them here. But I’d like to warn others. Purchased 4 fish. 1 fish died, 1 has ich. My tank was cycled, they were properly acclimated, and my water quality levels are perfect. I believe he also sold me fish, or too many, that were too large for my tank, even though I told him the size. I will not be back and would rather stick to Petco or Petsmart over this place. Sad because we tried to patronize a local spot, and we got burned big time.”
— Jennifer M1.03 months ago“Very nice Owner”
— Kristen5.04 months ago“Pete is always incredibly informative and helpful every time I stop by. He has always been reliable in offering support and having medications handy for when Im dealing with a parasitic outbreak. The fish he sells are very healthy and well kept. I will be sure to only shop with Pete at his store.”
— Mario Rodriguez5.03 weeks ago“I bought some mystery snails and some Java fern from here about a month ago. They've been doing great for my Betta tank. The Java fern propagated as well. Super glad I came here to get some good, healthy tank mates for my Betta”
— kyle wang5.0a month ago“Absolutely outstanding experience at Pete’s Aquariums & Fish. I purchased an octopus, and the staff was incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely cared about the animal’s well-being. They took the time to explain proper acclimation steps, tank safety, and how to ensure the health of both the octopus and existing livestock. You can tell they prioritize responsible care and education, not just sales. Highly recommend for anyone serious about marine life.”
