About
Island Fish & Reef in Bohemia, New York, isn't your typical fish store — it's primarily an aquarium design, installation, and maintenance company that has built a loyal following across Long Island over more than a decade. Owner Chris Downs and his team, including the frequently praised Todd, specialize in creating and servicing both saltwater reef tanks and freshwater aquascapes for homes and businesses alike. What sets Island Fish & Reef apart is their hands-on, full-service approach.
They'll come to your home, set up your sump, dial in your plumbing, and walk you through exactly how everything works — even if it's your first time running a system with a sump. One customer recounted Chris arriving on a Saturday just to help troubleshoot a DIY skimmer, then becoming a regular biweekly maintenance client. Another reviewer noted the crew stayed until nearly midnight to ensure a saltwater ecosystem was functioning properly before leaving.
Their services span the full lifecycle of an aquarium: design and build, regular weekly or biweekly maintenance, tank moving and relocation, and equipment setup. Customers have praised seamless reef tank relocations where corals and fish arrived safely at new homes, and multiple reviewers highlight the team's ability to handle both elaborate coral reef setups and modest freshwater goldfish tanks with equal dedication. The technical knowledge runs deep.
The team is well-versed in reef keeping — corals, tangs, and the delicate chemistry that keeps a saltwater ecosystem thriving — while also demonstrating skill in freshwater aquascaping. Chris is frequently described as a patient educator who takes time to explain systems to novice tank owners, translating complex aquarium science into approachable guidance. With customers reporting 10- and 12-year relationships with the company, Island Fish & Reef has clearly earned its reputation on Long Island through consistent, reliable service.
If you're on the south shore of Suffolk County and need someone to build, move, or maintain an aquarium, Chris and his team deliver the kind of attentive, knowledgeable care that keeps both fish and their owners happy.

Customer reviews
“I hired them to move my fish tank. While the crew seemed professional with the equipment, I unfortunately lost 4 tangs during the process. All of my other fish survived, which makes me believe the transport methods may not have been ideal for more delicate species. For an aquarium moving company, I expected better preparation and care for livestock. This was a disappointing experience and I cannot recommend them for anyone moving sensitive fish.”

The pros at IF&R stayed with us until almost midnight to insure that our saltwater ecosystem was functioning and healthy. High touch service, and a professional, proactive and customer-focused approach - Island Fish and Reef is fantastic.”
