Ocean Aquarium has been a fixture of the South Jersey aquarium scene for decades, and its recent move to Tilton Road in Northfield hasn't dimmed its reputation. Run by owner John and his daughter, this family operation draws customers from over an hour away — particularly saltwater enthusiasts who consider it one of the best destinations on the East Coast for marine fish. The live rock, according to multiple regulars, is among the finest available in the region.
The store stocks a genuinely large selection of both freshwater and saltwater fish, and reviewers consistently note the health and vigor of the livestock. Long-time customers report corydoras catfish — albino and panda varieties — surviving six years and counting, a testament to the quality of fish leaving these tanks. You'll find leopard puffers, green spotted puffers, various corys, and species that shoppers say they've never encountered at other stores.
There's a small coral selection and a frozen fish food section, along with the supplies and equipment needed for both fresh and saltwater setups. What sets Ocean Aquarium apart is the depth of knowledge behind the counter. Staff have walked customers through severe ich outbreaks step by step, recommending medications and water change schedules until the problem resolved.
The owner is known for taking time with newcomers, distinguishing between essential equipment and unnecessary extras rather than pushing sales. One reviewer described bringing her grandchildren to the same store she visited as a little girl — the kind of generational loyalty that speaks volumes. The store is wheelchair accessible with wide aisles, and the atmosphere leans toward old-school fish shop — personal, unhurried, and deeply rooted in the hobby.
Prices run slightly higher than chain stores, but regulars argue the livestock quality, expert guidance, and years of trusted service more than justify the difference. For saltwater keepers in the Northfield area and well beyond, Ocean Aquarium remains the destination.

Great staff! The older gentleman could tell I wasn’t very experienced with aquariums and was completely honest about what I needed. He wasn’t interested in just making a sale — instead, he took the time to educate me on what was necessary versus what was optional or just extra flashy equipment.

Great store for fresh and salt water fish. He also has a small amount of coral, but if that's what you're looking for I'd suggest other stores. The live rock is the best I've found. The owner is extremely knowledgeable. They also have a small frozen fish food section.

Okay I'm done with this place. I've never had a good experience with one of the guys that works there. Im still trying to learn things about keeping fish and he makes me feel dumb every time i have a question. I had a fish that was getting to big for my tank so I asked if he wanted to take him. Without saying a word to me he aggressively grabbed the fish out of the bucket with his hands and walked away. I get you're around fish all day but that doesnt give you the right to handle them so aggressively. You also need to learn better social skills.

I have been coming here since I was a little girl and now I bring my grandkids. We have bought 2 leopard puffers and about 10 different Cory’s we stop in to get some brine shrimp eggs now and then. I love the fact that the staff will just talk fish with you and give some ideas on different fish. Love love love it
