About
First Choice Aquatics in Flemington, New Jersey, has built a loyal following among reef hobbyists for one clear reason: the corals are exceptional. " This is a coral-first shop, and owner Randy has leaned into that identity with obvious passion, even hosting the annual NJ Coral Show at the Elkwood Lodge to bring the local reefing community together. The store recently moved to a new, larger location, and regulars have noticed the upgrade.
Tanks are cleaner, the layout more organized, and the coral selection has expanded significantly. One customer running 370 gallons across three reef tanks called the new space a major step up and committed to making it their regular stop. Display tanks throughout the shop showcase what's possible, and Randy is known for helping customers scape and stock their setups — one reviewer credited him with helping design seven tanks and counting.
Beyond corals, First Choice Aquatics carries saltwater fish, freshwater fish, and live plants, though the saltwater side clearly gets the most attention and inventory. Dry goods cover the essentials — testing supplies, dosing equipment, frozen food, and pods — without venturing into deep discount territory. This isn't a budget shop; prices run higher than average, but multiple reviewers note the livestock quality justifies the cost, with zoanthids and fish thriving long-term after purchase.
Staff members like Jesi and Justin earn consistent praise for genuine helpfulness. Jesi once walked a customer through a saltwater issue over the phone with no purchase involved — the kind of service that builds trust. Randy also runs a tank maintenance program, transforming at least one longtime hobbyist's 55-gallon saltwater setup from a constant struggle into a stable, thriving system.
For reef keepers in central New Jersey willing to invest in premium coral and knowledgeable guidance, First Choice Aquatics delivers where it counts.

“Always helpful and kind and have so-much to chose from, and there corals are always stunning with so many to chose from, they also are always doing deals and discounts all year”
— Tyler Geiger5.0a week ago“Although I have never purchased from this place before, they absolutely deserve a 5 star review, joining the salt water hobby is no easy task, I just recently got into it and had a minor problem that had me worried. One of the workers (Jesi) answered the phone and; though she knew I had no intention of buying anything, had a problem and needed guidance. She was on the phone with me start to finish until we figured out the reason behind the problem, we need more businesses like them, that go above and beyond for there customers. Thank you guys for the phenomenal customer service.”
— Shawn Mam5.0a week ago“This shop is definitely coral first. Their coral/frag tanks are in fantastic shape with everything you could imagine and everything in mint condition. Only complaint is the pricing is a little insane compared to other shops within an hour radius. Regarding fish/inverts, the selection is always limited at best and disappointing. Additionally, the tanks and their inhabitants condition looks subpar. As other reviews have mentioned, the dry goods selection is basic but gets the job done. Frozen food and pods are available but $$$$$.”

— Kenneth Kolano2.04 weeks ago“Corals here are good quality and well cared for, though prices are a bit higher than the market average. I have personally bought zoanthids from this store and they have done very well long term in my own tank, so the quality is there if you treat them right. They host the NJ Coral Show at the Elkwood Lodge once a year, which shows real commitment to the local reefing community. My biggest issue is consistency with access. I have shown up more than once during posted open hours to find the doors locked. One time I called and they did open up, but it still felt like more effort than it should take just to get inside. The coral tanks are usually clean and attractive and clearly get most of the attention. Some of the other tanks tend to have algae that could be handled with better maintenance. The dry goods selection is basic. They have testing supplies and dosing equipment, mostly name brand items, but nothing fancy or budget focused. Display tanks for sale seem to rotate often. If you are on a tight budget, this probably is not the shop for you. If you have some flexibility and are looking for premium coral and supplies, it is worth checking out. Staff are fine overall. They are not pushy and will help if you ask, but they generally let you browse on your own.”
— ravi ravi4.0a month ago“Was in the area visiting friends decided to stop in, This place is amazing great selection of fish and coral. The person behind the counter was great and attentive answered a few of my questions. Had no intentions of buying another tank mate but had no choice the service was great Why Not Support local businesses that provide great service and go the extra mile.”
