Strictly REEF in Reno, Nevada occupies an interesting niche — despite the name suggesting an all-saltwater operation, this store has built a strong reputation around both freshwater and saltwater fish, live plants, and a notable reptile section. The aquatic side is clearly the main draw, with discretely filtered tanks that keep diseases from spreading between systems, and fish that customers consistently describe as healthy and parasite-free compared to big-box competitors. The live plant selection stands out as one of the store's strongest assets.
Customers praise the variety and quality of freshwater aquatic plants and terrarium plants alike, with pricing competitive with Petco and PetSmart but noticeably better quality. Staff members like Michelle and Devon have earned regular mentions for their willingness to walk customers through plant choices, whether for a freshwater aquarium or a bioactive reptile enclosure. The store stocks a solid range of hardscape materials — cork bark, driftwood, and other natural decor pieces that are hard to find locally and easier to select in person than ordering online.
They carry invertebrates including isopods and springtails, and their display terrariums showcase real care in presentation. Bettas, cichlids, koi, and various unique freshwater species populate their tanks, and the store has accepted rehomed fish from customers dealing with aggression issues. Pricing is the most polarizing aspect of Strictly REEF.
Multiple reviewers note that fish and equipment prices run significantly higher than online retailers or chain stores, with some items marked up substantially. The counterargument from loyal customers is that you're paying for healthier livestock and knowledgeable guidance — a trade-off many Reno aquarists seem willing to make. It's worth noting that the reptile side of the business has drawn serious criticism, with documented cases of snakes sold in poor health.
The aquatic side, however, earns consistently positive marks. For Reno hobbyists focused on freshwater planted tanks, saltwater setups, or pond fish, the staff knowledge and livestock quality make it a go-to local shop.

Will definitely be coming back for more bettas or other fish. Came in to just browse wasn’t expecting to get a betta till I spotted one in the tanks and fell in love. The workers were so kind and friendly. They had so much valuable knowledge to share and made sure i knew what I was getting into. Even though it’s a small business prices were respectable and reasonable and all the fishes looked to be healthy and happy. Just wonderful people and experience!

Back in 2025 my girlfriend bought a snake from strictly reef. She was looking for a calmer snake and they led her to this corn snake because it was much calmer and didn't move as much. Which should have been a red flag however she was still newer to snake ownership. However just 12 days later after bringing her home the snake passed away and my girlfriend was devastated and she called strictly reef and told them and they asked to bring the snake in to look. They ended up blaming her for the snake's passing saying it was nothing they did wrong and it was neglect on her part because the snake was eating just fine for them. Offered her a 10% discount if she wanted to get another pet but that was it. She then had it examined at the Washington State University for a necropsy. The pathology report showed the snake had zero percent body fat, a body condition of 1 out of 5, as well as adenovirus. This doesn't just appear in 12 days and is a sign strictly reef didn't care if the snake was sick or they may not have known. But the fact she has so little body fat is a big sign. I would never recommend strictly reef to anyone ever.

Most of my issues with Strictly Reef are pretty small, like recommending prey that's too small or telling me incorrect humidity and temperature levels. However, a friend of mine got a Corn Snake from this place and died soon after. Apparently the Corn Snake had an undeclared health issue that Strictly Reef denies the Corn Snake of having or knowing about it. Decent place to get supplies (and maybe fish? no real clue there) but they might sell you a sickly pet and not tell you. And my friend did get her Corn Snake an autopsy by a professional and agreed about the undeclared health issues.

My mom and I had bought my first corn snake (Palmetto) from Strictly Reef in 2025. We were new to owning snakes and wanted something that would be calm and quiet due to my mom having mobility issues. Strictly Reef had guided us to this corn snake and showed how she was slow and not very active. I know now that this should have been a red flag, at the time I was trusting Strictly Reef and their expertise. 12 days after we brought her home the corn snake had passed away. I was devastated, I kept her tank in perfect condition and was not sure what went wrong. I called Strictly Reef, told them what had happened and asked them to look at the corn snake and tell me what happened. They agreed and I brought her over immediately as I was picking up a ball python we bought a day after we bought the corn. Strictly Reef then told me that since she was eating with them, the cause of death was my fault and they would not offer a refund. At most they would offer me a 10% off discount on my next live animal purchase. They then proceeded to offer me another Palmetto with a crooked tail. This felt like a slap to the face, up to this point we had spent over 5k there within the last year. I took the palmetto body and the new ball python to a friend who was an experienced snake owner and was told something was off with the corn. My mom then sent the Corn body to Washington State University for a necropsy. The pathologist stated the snake had a zero percent body fat, a body condition score of 1 out of 5, and to top it off adenovirus. The fact that Strictly Reef would sell a snake in this condition is heartbreaking and enraging as they either were neglectful enough to sell me a sick snake without realizing she was suffering or were so eager to make a sale they sold a failure to thrive snake to a new to reptile owner, hoping they won't notice and blame them when the snake dies. The actions of Strictly Reef almost cost me the love of reptiles. I was ready to rehome my reptiles and never own another again as I thought I was a terrible owner. It took another reptile store in Carson City to bring back my confidence. To anyone looking to join the reptile world, I strongly encourage you to NEVER step foot into Strictly Reef. I have pictures and reports if the employees at Strictly Reef or anyone curious would like to see and discuss further.

First off, this place is a bit on the pricey side. Having said that, they have an amazing selection of plants and some very unique fish. Every time I've bought fish they are very healthy. Tanks are discretely filtered so no worries about diseases being shared between tanks. I love this place. Definitely worth checking out!

Nice staff great service. As a reptile keeper I find some items pricey. But knowledgeable staff and have proper plants for my bioactive enclosures. Clean store as well. Reptile feeder bugs pricey as we but I raise my own anyway.
