Fantastic Fins in Livonia, Michigan is the kind of fish store that exists because someone genuinely loves the hobby. Owner Dale has built a devoted following over the years — customers who drive past big-box pet stores specifically to buy from him, customers who credit him with getting them hooked on plecos, and kids who look forward to Sunday visits just to see what new species have arrived. The store is compact and unpolished — multiple reviewers note it won't win any interior design awards — but the tanks are well-cycled and the fish are consistently healthy.
That tradeoff matters. Customers report taking home longfin white clouds, peppered cory catfish, cardinal tetras, blue and red shrimp, piranhas, red shoulder severums, and glass-like orange and white guppies, all in excellent condition. Plecos are a particular strength here; Dale's personal passion for them has made Fantastic Fins a destination for pleco enthusiasts across the Plymouth-Canton area.
Rare and uncommon freshwater species rotate through regularly, giving repeat visitors a reason to keep coming back. One detail that speaks volumes: the bettas are kept in individual 10-gallon tanks rather than the sad cups found at chain stores. Dale has also been known to hand over sponge filter media to help customers kickstart nitrogen cycles in new setups — the kind of practical generosity that builds loyalty.
The store carries a small section of dry goods and equipment, and the staff will happily order specific items on request. But the real draw is the consultation. Dale and his team will walk you through compatibility, care requirements, and tank setup with genuine patience.
He knows the provenance of his fish, breeds some himself (including piranhas from a customer return), and won't upsell you on things you don't need. For freshwater aquarium keepers in the Livonia area who value fish health and honest expertise over flashy retail presentation, Fantastic Fins delivers where it counts.

Dale is super knowledgeable, and always helpful! My son enjoys his fish talks with him. His fish are great too! We have purchased many over the years!

Anyone coming here for the first time please know that yes the store isnt spic and span clean, but the aquariums are perfect for the fish, the water is perfect for fish, the owner knows his stuff and takes care of his fish. The tanks are well cycled, so the fish are more likely to be healthy and happy.

We pulled into the parking lot and the place seemed closed because it was pretty dark inside. The open sign was on so we went in The person in the shop was nice. We looked around. There was small section of dry goods. The tanks were not the cleanest. Some had little to no fish. Lots of snails and plecos. The store was very unkempt. When leaving the person let us know if we wanted anything he’d be able to order it for us.

The owner and employees are true fish nerds. Super knowledgeable and will take time out of his day to help you out. He knows his stuff and will not try an sell you anything you don't need. I got a school of longfin white clouds and some peppered Cory catfish a while ago and they where super healthy. I definitely recommend this shop if your new to the hobby.

Dirty store and aquariums were so filthy you could barely see the fish.
