About

Fantastic Fins is the kind of Livonia, MI aquarium store that exists because owner Dale genuinely loves the hobby, and after more than 300 reviews his regulars still drive past the big-box chains to buy from him. People come for the fish and stay for the talks: customers describe calling Dale with questions and actually getting answers, and more than a few credit him with getting them hooked on plecos in the first place. Plecos are the headline here.

One recent visitor hunted all over Michigan for a dwarf snowball pleco and found Dale was the only shop in the state that carried them; another walked out with "absolutely stunning" plecos and called this the biggest, most impressive freshwater selection in Southeast Michigan. Beyond plecos, the tanks rotate through rare and uncommon species you won't find at chain stores. Recent shoppers have turned up hard-to-source Emerald corydoras, longfin white clouds, peppered cory catfish, cardinal tetras, blue and red shrimp, glass-like orange and white guppies, and the occasional piranha.

If you want shrimp for sale in Livonia, MI, or a rare catfish near me, this is the kind of place that quietly has it. The systems are clearly run by someone who knows fish: full, active, well-cycled tanks stocked with species serious hobbyists actually keep. The bettas live in individual 10-gallon tanks instead of cups.

The store is compact and dimly lit, and reviewers are upfront that it won't win interior-design awards, but the payoff is health and honesty. Dale won't sell a fish that isn't in ideal condition, and he won't push gear you don't need. The other reason regulars return is the help.

One newer customer recalled Dale handing over beneficial bacteria and fish food to kickstart a new tank rather than just selling an algae eater and sending them off. Another praised the patient weekend employee who answered every question. There's a small dry-goods and equipment section, and the team will order specific items on request.

For freshwater aquarium keepers around Livonia who value fish health and honest expertise over flashy retail, Fantastic Fins delivers where it counts.

  • “Had a great experience . They were incredibly knowledgeable and genuinely cared about setting me up the right way. Instead of just trying to sell me things, they took the time to explain everything and even gave me beneficial bacteria to help start my tank, along with some fish food. It’s refreshing to find a place that puts the health of your aquarium first. Highly recommend! Ended up buying 4 awesome fish. He could have just sold me a algae eater and told me to wait a couple weeks, and asked me to bring a water sample. Definitely will be back”

  • “I had been looking for some Emerald corydoras locally for some time and stumbled into this store based on the reviews. I went looking for particular loaches and didn't think to ask about the Emeralds because they are difficult to find. To my surprise they had two huge Emeralds. They have a good variety of fish. I'll have to come back next time I need another fish.”

  • “I really liked this store. I went on Saturday around 4:00 PM, and the employee working there was absolutely the friendliest! He was very patient, answered all my questions clearly, and had a very pleasant attitude. Plus, they have some amazing fish that I had never seen in person before; I appreciated the variety, especially the fact that you can find more unique fish, rather than just the common ones you see everywhere else.”

  • “Go to Dale! I was frustrated with my experience of fish stores in Farmington and Howell. This guy was laid back but knowledgeable and wants you to succeed. Asks you what food you are feeding and even gets premium food to sell that he packages himself. He gave me advice for the future when they get bigger, asked me their sex. Just really took his time with me, knew the exotic fish I have. Hallelujah. Big win for me, thanks Dale!”

  • “Dale is hands down the best in the business. If you’re into fish—especially plecos—this is the place to go. From common varieties to some of the rarest types you won’t find anywhere else, his selection is incredible. I was searching everywhere for a dwarf snowball pleco, and Dale was the only store in Michigan that had them. You can immediately tell how passionate and knowledgeable he is. He truly cares about the health of his fish and is incredibly ethical—he won’t sell a fish if it doesn’t look like it’s in ideal condition. That kind of integrity is rare and really shows how much he values both his animals and his customers. I’ve visited just about every fish store in the Southeast Michigan area, and this place easily has the biggest and most impressive selection I’ve seen. Prices are very fair, and Dale is always kind, honest, and happy to share his expertise. I ended up bringing home some absolutely stunning plecos and couldn’t be happier. I’ll definitely be returning. Highly recommend to anyone in the hobby!”

  • “These tanks are clearly maintained by someone who knows fish. The systems are full, active, and stocked with species that serious hobbyists actually keep—not the three plastic-decor setups you see in big-box stores. The fish look healthy, the systems are stable, and the variety is incredible. Anyone who has actually spent time in serious aquarium shops knows the difference between a sterile-looking display and a well-run system. If you want a real aquarium shop run by someone who genuinely knows and cares about fish, this is exactly that place.”
