Easy Aquariums in Westbrook, Maine has built a loyal following over the years, earning its reputation as the go-to independent aquarium and reptile shop in the southern Maine area. The store stocks both freshwater and saltwater fish alongside a selection of live plants, reptiles like bearded dragons, leopard geckos, blue tongue skinks, and snakes, plus a solid inventory of filters, foods, and other supplies. The freshwater section is where Easy Aquariums shines brightest.
Reviewers consistently praise the health and variety of their fish — from double fin bettas to specific breeds available at reasonable prices. Their live plant selection draws planted tank enthusiasts, though some customers have noted they'd love to see more foreground carpeting species like dwarf sagittaria added to the lineup. The store also accepts special orders for hard-to-find fish, which is a significant draw for hobbyists who can't find what they want at chain stores.
Staff member Larissa gets singled out repeatedly as an exceptional resource, earning what one reviewer called "six gold stars" for her knowledge and care. The team in general is frequently praised for being genuinely helpful — the kind of people who will talk you through bearded dragon husbandry over the course of a year or pre-socialize a blue tongue skink before it goes home with a new owner. The saltwater section features corals and marine fish, with high-end lighting equipment like Kessil and AI fixtures installed on tanks, though some visitors have noted the coral selection and tank maintenance could use more attention.
The store has undergone renovations and overhauls in recent times, suggesting the team is actively investing in improvements. For aquarists in the greater Portland and Westbrook area who want an alternative to big-box pet retailers, Easy Aquariums offers something chain stores simply can't — staff who remember your name, the ability to special order specific species, and the kind of hands-on guidance that keeps fish thriving well past their expected lifespans. The prices are fair, the fish are healthy, and the passion behind the operation is evident.

Absolute best experience, their amazing customer service with their great deals & good selection of fish had me excited. There arent many aquarium shops nearby besides large franchise with low quality & high prices- it was a breathe of fresh air seeing quality care.

Had high hopes for this place, unfortunately did not live up, not sure what happed here. 3/10 overall experience I want to start by saying that I understand the workplace environment of a local pet store (working in one myself) I know that it’s not always the cleanest and it can be had to put on a smile and help someone when your just not feeling it. With this said, I have been visiting all the fish and reptile stores in the New England area and my travels had brought me an hour and a half all the way to easy aquariums Maine. Walking in, my friend and I were immediately hit with very high humidity and high temperatures, no biggy, kind of understandable for a fish store, however there was a foul smell that was overwhelming us the entire visit, my friend said to me (20min after entering the store) that he needed to exit the building to get fresh air as he said it was getting hard to breathe, i now suspect this could be partially due to mold. I was congested at the time so it wasn’t as bad for me but he never complains about smell and isnt sensitive to it usually. As we moved our way through the store we found ourselves in the saltwater section. My notes are as follows: poor selection, dirty tanks, bleaching corals, brown jelly disease( I suspect), dirty tanks, salt creep everywhere. We were sad to see this, the fish did look better than the coral, though I can not say for sure as I did not buy anything. Moving towards the freshwater section tanks looked good, nothing clearly wrong, some of the plants were looking a bit dicey but not too bad, I would say this was a 6/10 if petco is a 4/10, finally the reptile section. This area saddened us the most, enclosures were very dirty (reptile feces everywhere) and they were not visually appealing, the vibe it gave off was “we don’t care what they look like” now I’m not saying they don’t, maybe it was the day we came, but very unfortunate. My final grievances are the unclean floors ( trust me I know a dirty floor and these were truly dirty) the random piles of unclean aquariums and aquarium supplies, the unorganized feel of most things, and finally the overall vibe of the place seems to echo and live in the shadow of some former glory days, I noticed high quality equipment (such as Kessle and AI lights in their tanks) but not using them to their full potential, maybe this place used to be better, but all I can say is I will unfortunately not be returning, sorry easy aquariums.

**Edit: I think it’s clear from the passive aggressive and untruthful response to my review why it’s all the more clear why people should steer clear of here (bad vibes confirmed lol). It was literally admitted by an employee weeks after my fish perished that you all had an epistylis outbreak, and since it was the first and only fish in that aquarium that time, it’s quite impossible for it to have been anything else (I was undeniably epistylis). The reason why I have had better interactions at box stores is not because they had significantly better service or stock, but because my several visits to this store had been SO abysmal (and I haven’t received any ill stock from anyone other than Easy Aquariums). Clearly from other reviews I’m not the only one who thinks this store is majorly lacking. Sold me a fish earlier this year with epistylis which infected my tank and then died, later admitting they were having an active epistylis outbreak (they accept fish from hobbyists but dont quarantine well I guess). Some time later, I special ordered a specific kind of fish, which came in after a long wait, only to have one of the fish deformed - not their fault, but weird kinda judgy vibes gotten from the employee that was helping me that day when I didn’t end up wanting them. Placed another special order for the same kind of fish, hopefully not deformed this time, never heard back from them. Last encounter was maybe a month or two back, went in to look for another kind of fish and plants, and was met by a worker who seemed pretty uninterested in being there/helping me. Overall weird vibes here and it’s always kind of gross/wet/filthy. I want to like and support the local fish store but honestly I’ve had better experiences at both pet quarters and petco by the mall (which is a pretty low bar). It’s strange too bc I hear good things about this place from others, just haven’t experienced that myself unfortunately.

We’ve been going to EA for years. Even at their old location. The staff is always knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. They always have great variety of animals, supplies, and food for the animals. We’ve gotten so many healthy fish who have LONG outlived their “life expectancy” from here & have an absolutely wonderful Blue Tongue Skink who we adore that was pre-socialized by the staff and has continued to be a beloved pet for years. She is an absolute doll! We always come here for our supplies, and will continue to support them as long as they’re in business!
