Atlantis Aquatic Gardens has been a fixture in Terre Haute for years, drawing families and hobbyists to its sprawling collection of tropical freshwater and saltwater fish. The store stocks a broad selection — customers have picked up cherry shrimp and female guppies at competitive prices, and long-time patrons praise the health and longevity of the fish they've purchased. Staff members like Bill are frequently mentioned for their willingness to answer questions and suggest products tailored to individual setups, and the owner has earned respect for keeping the aquarium hobby accessible to the local community.
Beyond aquatics, Atlantis functions as a menagerie of sorts. A parrot named Nigel has become something of a local celebrity, charming visitors who stop in regularly just to interact with him. Turtles, iguanas, and an alligator round out the exotic animal offerings, and the ability to feed and handle some of the friendlier residents gives the store an interactive, almost zoo-like atmosphere that makes it a popular destination for families with kids.
That said, the store's reputation is complicated. While the fish department draws consistent praise for variety and quality, a significant number of reviewers have raised serious concerns about the condition of reptile and bird enclosures. Reports of unsanitary housing, overcrowding, stuck shed, and underweight animals recur across multiple reviews spanning different time periods.
Some customers describe conditions that have prompted them to contact animal welfare organizations. The contrast between the well-regarded aquatics section and the troubled reptile and bird areas is stark and worth noting for anyone considering a visit. For Terre Haute aquarists specifically, Atlantis Aquatic Gardens remains the go-to local source for both freshwater and saltwater livestock and supplies.
The knowledgeable staff, competitive pricing on fish and invertebrates, and genuine community feel in the aquatics department keep loyal customers coming back. Just know that the store experience extends well beyond fish tanks, and not all departments receive the same level of care.

I always love the variety of animals they have. The fact that you can feed and interact with some of the friendly animals really brings it all together. The workers are also very helpful and nice. My family and I love coming here any chance we get. Definitely recommend

I’ve gone here ever since I was little and sad to say it’s never changed. The reptiles and birds are living in such poor conditions. I’ve unfortunately had to buy bugs from them and they tried to sell me baby Dubia Roaches as 1 inch adults. I only go there now to see if those poor reptiles and birds are getting better and they never do, in fact they get worse the more the owner brings in. The Leopard Geckos are starving and injured. The alligator is incredibly sad, she lives in a crawl space covered in dust and cobwebs under the iguana. They need to be shut down and held accountable

Wide variety of fish and products, fresh and saltwater. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable of the hobby, and the owner seems genuinely interested in keeping the life of the hobby available to everyone. These shops operate at minimal profits to provide a safe place to learn and grow into the hobby, beginner or veteran this store does a great job serving everyone who walks through those doors.
