About
Atlantis Aquatic Gardens is a long-running Terre Haute institution — the kind of sprawling, room-after-room aquarium store that locals have wandered through since childhood. For hobbyists, the draw is the fish: regulars call it one of the best fish selections in the area, spanning tropical freshwater community species and a saltwater section, with both fresh and saltwater livestock kept under one roof. Shoppers consistently praise the variety and the value, walking out with cherry shrimp and female guppies at prices they say are hard to beat — making this a dependable spot for shrimp and livebearers for sale in Terre Haute, IN.
If you're hunting for freshwater or saltwater fish near me in the Wabash Valley, Atlantis covers a lot of ground. Live plants, hobby-pond supplies, tank and terrarium gear, and everyday fish-care basics are all available in Terre Haute, IN, and the staff are a big reason people keep coming back. Longtime employee Bill gets named again and again for patiently answering questions and recommending the right products for a specific setup, and the owner has a reputation for caring about the local aquatics community and keeping the hobby accessible.
Plenty of customers say the fish they bring home thrive for years. The store also doubles as a small menagerie, which is part of its character — Nigel the parrot is a local celebrity, the resident birds will happily hold a "conversation," and koi, turtles, and other animals turn a routine supply run into an outing families plan around. In fairness, a steady stream of reviewers raise serious concerns about the condition of the reptile and bird enclosures, a recurring criticism worth weighing before a visit.
For Terre Haute aquarists, though, Atlantis Aquatic Gardens remains the go-to local fish store for livestock, shrimp, plants, and supplies — an independent shop where the knowledgeable staff and standout fish selection keep loyal customers returning week after week.

“Diamond in the rough. One of the best selections of fish in the area.”
— Shawn Davis5.037 minutes ago“Small and dirty reptile enclosures filled with poop. Most of the reptiles have mouth rot and open wounds. Absolutely horrible conditions, they should be ashamed!!”
— Gabriellia McCann1.0a day ago“Animals are NOT being taken care of properly. Specifically reptiles and amphibians. I raise whites tree frogs and saw they had clearly sick ones packed into maybe a 15 gallon tank with ONE branch. These are arboreal creatures and need room to climb and MINIMUM 20 gallon tank for ONE of the size they had in there, let alone 4. I tried to reach out to the owner directly on Facebook and my message was read and never got a response. This is not the first incidence of me visiting and being so devastated by how these poor animals are kept. Even noticing a dead pacman frog they had in essentially a Tupperware on the desk before the workers noticed. I came back recently in hopes they had changed but discovered nothing has. I wish i had the money to save those poor poor whites tree frogs with bumps and lumps and assuredly a bacterial infection. This place seriously needs some regulations. It has potential to be so good”
— Hannah Dean1.03 days ago“came back to this place for a little nostalgia. when i was a kid i absolutely loved seeing all the animals but now that im older, all i see is neglect and it makes me sick. why are we housing adult bearded dragons together knowing that they are territorial?”
— erica1.02 weeks ago“They have a great reptile exhibit. But the parrots and other birds are amazing”
— Rick Young5.0a month ago“Wide variety of fish and reptiles. A few birds as well. My kiddo loved seeing everything there, definitely plan on becoming a regular visit in town!”
— Kensey Berndt5.02 months ago“So many kinds of fish. I'm not sure what the building used to be you wander through several different rooms of various sizes but it does have the most interesting collection snakes lizards and big birds. I do wish the lighting and there was better.”
— kathy stoddard4.02 months ago“Very sad small dirty enclosure. This place should be shut down”
— Jonny Crone1.02 months ago“I have shopped here my whole life! Love this place! Nice variety of supplies for hobby ponds, fish care, tank and terrarium needs, live plants, exotic animals, and all the resident birds that you can hold conversations with! 😂 The owner is passionate and very knowledgeable! The staff are always kind, relatable and SO helpful! I come to shop/visit every week!”
— Alexandra McMasters5.0Edited 3 months ago“The kids absolutely loved this place. They have so many different animals to look at. Some are for sale and some are just on display. It’s very neatly set up, not like a normal pet store.”
