About
Aquatropics has anchored the Gainesville, FL aquarium scene for well over a decade, and for many local fishkeepers it's the first stop in town for both livestock and gear. The shop spans freshwater and saltwater worlds under one roof, stocking everything from 10-gallon starter kits to towering 800-gallon display tanks, along with stands, canopies, and the specialty supplies big-box pet stores simply don't carry. On the saltwater side, reef hobbyists come for a rotating selection of corals and marine fish that regulars describe as healthy and vibrant.
The freshwater department runs just as deep: cichlids, bettas, guppies and other livebearers, discus, and lush live plants. A koi pond near the back has its own loyal following — one longtime customer started with two Japanese koi and now keeps nine, stopping in just to see what's new in the pond. Anyone searching for koi or planted-tank plants for sale in Gainesville, FL tends to get pointed here first.
The staff is the real draw. Names like Ian, Rhett, Andy, Corey, Robbie, Arthur, and Samantha come up again and again for the patience they show first-time tank owners. Robbie helped one shopper build a small shrimp tank from scratch; Arthur turned another customer's struggling plants into a thriving, oxygen-pumping aquascape.
They'll talk through stocking compatibility, medication choices, and full tank setups without rushing or hard-selling. There's a reptile corner too, where snake and lizard keepers have leaned on healthy feeder crickets for years. New fish shipments tend to land midweek, so Wednesday and Thursday walk-ins usually turn up the freshest stock.
4-star rating built over years of in-person service, Aquatropics is what most locals mean when they search for an aquarium store near me around Gainesville.

Customer reviews
“Treatment of fish and their birds is not very humane/ethical.”
— Hollis Mahe Song1.0a day ago“Walked... guy on phone. Walked around, another guy with customer. I kept looking all over. Both were done, then spent 15 minutes talking to each other. I went over to expensive koi to trigger attention... nope... guy came from rear if store, passed me to answer phone. Not at all helped in any way. I walked out same as I went in... fish less. Heeeeete fishy... now they helped and taught me some stuff. Earned my business.”
— Gaylin Kelly1.04 days ago“I am frustrated. I have shopped at Aquatropics for a long time, fish, plants, decor, etc. I wanted to support a local business, but I am done. I can't anymore. This is the second time I've bought plants from here and the second time that my tank has been infected with bladder snails. Last time I blamed myself thinking it was my fault. It got so bad and they repopulated so quickly that I couldn't keep up and in the end my fish died from how bad the water quality got. I had to toss everything from the tank and start from zero. I made the mistake of buying three plants from here and all three were infested with bladder snail eggs and now I'm back to trying to control the population and trying to rid them for the sake of my new fish. I'm so upset.”
— Rory Night1.04 days ago“Always friendly and courteous. And a knowledgeable staff.”

— MsHell Strength5.0Edited 2 weeks ago“Ive gotten plants from here that have been very healthy, but recently I bought 25 live Bladder snails and when I added them to their tank at home nearly half of them were deceased, I couldn't tell at first but after a few days they are right where I put them. Ill change my review if they allow me to replace the dead snails”
