About
Aquatropics has been a fixture of the Gainesville, Florida aquarium scene for well over a decade, and for many local fishkeepers it's the only game in town worth visiting. Occupying a space that spans both freshwater and saltwater worlds, the store stocks everything from 10-gallon starter setups to towering 800-gallon display tanks, along with stands, canopies, and the kind of specialty supplies that big box retailers simply don't carry. The saltwater section draws reef tank enthusiasts with a rotating selection of corals and marine fish that regulars describe as healthy and vibrant.
Freshwater offerings run deep as well — cichlids, bettas, guppies, live plants, and the occasional oddity like a valentine puffer that one customer's wife picked up as a gift (it promptly ate everything in the tank, but the store offered store credit). New fish shipments typically arrive midweek, so Wednesday and Thursday visits tend to yield the freshest selection. Staff members like Ian, Rhett, Andy, and Corey come up repeatedly in reviews for their willingness to walk customers through tank setup decisions, medication recommendations, and stocking compatibility.
Ian, in particular, has earned praise for guiding first-time tank owners through questions they didn't even know to ask. The store also carries a reptile section that draws its own loyal following — snake owners have relied on Aquatropics for feeders for years. It's not without rough edges.
Some visitors have flagged tank maintenance inconsistencies, and the saltwater side has occasionally felt neglected compared to the freshwater department. A few compatibility recommendations have missed the mark — one cichlid keeper lost several fish after a costly stocking suggestion went sideways. 4-star rating built over years of service, Aquatropics has earned its reputation as the strongest aquatic shop within a wide radius of Gainesville.
The inventory turns over constantly, the staff genuinely engages with the hobby, and for local aquarists it remains the first stop for both livestock and gear.

— Ed Con5.0a week ago“Best place in town for aquariums! Corey is super nice and extremely helpful!”
— Richard Singletary5.02 weeks ago“Employees in the fish department have no Clue what fish get along. I have a 180 gallon tank with cichlids and they sold me a red devil and then suggested clown loaches and a large Oscar and parrot fish. I bought the red devil, 2 clown loaches and the Oscar and 2 parrot fish. The red devil DESTROYED AND KILLED the parrots, loaches and Oscar. The employees are far from Intelligent when it comes to what gets along and the attitudes of the fish they sell. Would up wasting $360. I’ll be sure to let my fish community in Ocala to stay away and stay local. Huge disappointment and wasted trip. Paid $360 for 1 fish to have an expensive meal. And I paid cash. Very upset.”

Ian helped me pick out my first tank and answered every question I had, and answered questions I didnt even know I should ask. Rhett can also answer anything as well. He also know his fish! Everyone in this store is always willing to help! Love their selection of fish, and it changes every week.”
— Patrick Donnelly5.0a month ago“So amusing to look at variety of fish. A relaxing experience. I was wondering why some fish were kept alone. Then I found out that they are aggressive and hurt other fish!”
