About
Barrier Reef has been a Boca Raton landmark since the late 1990s, and a recent change in ownership has given this longtime South Florida shop a fresh start. Regulars who remember the old space describe a top-to-bottom refresh — a clean, modern layout, brighter lighting, and sharp new displays — while familiar faces like Joey, who has worked here for years, keep the institutional knowledge intact. " This is first and foremost a saltwater aquarium store, and the reef tanks are the draw.
You'll find marine fish, corals, and invertebrates for sale in Boca Raton, FL, with a new coral setup recently added to expand the frag selection. It isn't saltwater-only, though: the freshwater side runs deep, from everyday community fish to exotics with vibrant color, live aquatic plants, and a standout jumbo betta collection that hobbyists single out. A stunning koi pond anchors the showroom and makes browsing an experience in itself.
Beyond livestock, Barrier Reef stocks tanks in every size — including Juwel aquariums imported from Germany — plus lights, equipment, fish food, chemicals, and the kind of hard-to-find supplies you won't see at a big box store. RO and saltwater are available on tap, and the in-store water fill station is a regular stop for tank keepers across the area. What keeps customers loyal is the guidance.
Staff like Joey, Gary, and Melissa take time with newcomers and seasoned reefkeepers alike, talking through fish compatibility, coral care, lighting, and water management without rushing the sale. The shop also offers tank maintenance, setup, and in-home installation for anyone who wants help getting a system dialed in. Prices can run higher than the chains, but for healthy livestock and real expertise, this family-owned aquarium store remains a go-to for serious aquarists across Boca Raton and greater South Florida.

Customer reviews
“Kind of miss the old setup.. The store is nice and all, they definitely put in a lot of work to change it completely around. But I kind of liked the old rundown look it had before. I kind of got irritated by the transgender who just talked to much and kept interrupting my conversation with with the older fella. But like I said, the store is nice, clean and new looking. Guess the old store meant more to me. I'll probably won't be back. 3 stars because of the trans being rude...”
— Me.3.0a week ago“New to the area, looking for a salt and freshwater LFS. The fish they had in stock for both were plentiful and decent prices. They had minimal coral frags and those that were there were highly priced. I was told a new coral setup was coming in this week. The disappointing aspect of my visit was the service. I came in for water and there were multiple employees and one other customer. When I finally got someone's attention, he started filling my water and was pulled away for another customer. 5 minutes later I found him chatting at the front desk with another employee and had completely forgotten my water. While I respect that stores get busy, this was not the case. It was just poor customer service.”
— Mike Conrath3.02 weeks ago“We absolutely love Barrier Reef! We have two fish tanks, and this is the only place we trust and confidently recommend. The staff always takes the time to answer questions, offer advice, and help us make the best decisions for our aquariums—whether it’s choosing the right fish, plants, or solving a problem. What really sets Barrier Reef apart is the knowledge and care they provide. Every time we visit, we learn something new from Joey. His expertise is incredible, and it’s obvious that he genuinely cares about the health of the fish and the success of his customers’ tanks. I also love supporting this family-owned business that has been serving the community for decades. You can truly feel the heart and soul they put into everything they do. Their passion, honesty, and customer service are second to none. If you’re new to the hobby or an experienced aquarist, I highly recommend Barrier Reef. Boca Raton is lucky to have them!”
— Milla Foster5.03 weeks ago“As a 40 year veteran of the aquarium industry, its onky been a very few(3) times in was ever impressed. Today was one of those days. 30 or so years ago I walked into Barrier Reef and gladly never went back. After talking to an industry buddy I had to poke my head in after hearing of new owners. WOW, as a retail guy the store was merchandised very well with a great selection, as a fish guy, the selection was great and looked very healthy. Id highly recommend visiting this place.”
— Phantom Reefer5.0a month ago“I've come here a few times since reopening. I bought some test kits today that the owner told me were the best ones on the market. I should have looked them up in the store because the reviews for the product were poor so I decided to return them right away. I was shocked to learn upon trying to return the 2 items 20 minutes after I bought them, they they refuse to refund in any other form than store credit, which they do not specify at time of sale. Very disappointed that the only dedicated fish store in the area is not run by hobbyists but by businessmen. Will drive an extra half hour each way to Nature Aquariums before coming here again.”
