About
Tucked into a residential neighborhood in North Haven, Dietter's Water Gardens is a destination pond and fish store that draws water-garden enthusiasts from across Connecticut — regulars happily drive well over an hour just to wander the greenhouses. This is a working water garden operation, not a typical pet shop: multiple greenhouses, an on-site display pond with a deck running right to the water's edge, and a staff led by owner Rob who lives and breathes pond ecosystems. The focus is unmistakably pond life.
One entire greenhouse is devoted to koi of various sizes, including butterfly koi, while others overflow with aquatic plants — water lilies, lotus, water hyacinths, and even carnivorous native pitcher plants. You'll also find the critters that keep a pond balanced: crayfish, bullfrog tadpoles, and snails for natural algae control. Koi and goldfish for sale in North Haven, CT come from healthy, well-kept stock, and families love that staff will let kids pick out tadpoles and snails or pet the friendly koi gliding through the display pond.
Service runs as deep as retail here. , done two hours later. Both Rob and staffer Bobby get singled out for patiently answering every question about which plants, fish, and organisms will build a thriving, balanced pond.
" It worked. Prices on fish and plants run a bit above some other Connecticut shops, and weekends can get busy, but most visitors find the premium justified by livestock health, plant selection, and the depth of on-site expertise. They also stock koi food at prices that undercut the big online sellers, plus a full line of pond supplies.
For anyone serious about building or maintaining a pond near North Haven, CT, Dietter's is the specialist.

“Great place. Bobby is extremely professional and knowledgeable. He was able to answer every single question we had about the fish and plants. We purchased 2 fish, one butterfly koi and one goldfish. Unfortunately, one had died the next day with no explanation. I was devastated, so my boyfriend brought me back the next day to purchase another fish, but Bobby let us have another one since we lost our previous one. Incredible service. Will definitely be back & will never go anywhere else. Thank you!!”

— Asher Elliott3.0Edited a month ago“I went here specifically for some input on my small pond. The owner(I believe) was busy with a high end client who was spending a lot of $_$ $. I waited about fifteen minutes without recognition and then was given the brush off to an underling. Total jerk, and it was super pricey. I can forgive high prices for customer service , professionalism and expertise, but not this occasion.”
— Carolyn Williams1.0a month ago“They were so sweet with our daughter helping pick out the tadpoles and snails. They also had a great selection for plants. We really enjoyed checking out the Koi.”
— Nicholas Adams5.0a month ago“I have been coming here for the last few years and I have always been treated very well. The staff is great! This year I took my 11 month old granddaughter and she just loved it! The staff and Rob were great with her and let her pet the fish in addition to helping me select more fish and plants. Thank you so much!”
