About

House of Fins has anchored the Greenwich, CT aquarium scene for decades, and one step inside explains the loyalty it inspires across Fairfield County and the wider tri-state area. The tanks are the first thing regulars mention — reviewers repeatedly call them the cleanest they have ever seen in any shop, and that discipline shows in the livestock. On the saltwater side, this is a serious aquarium store: a deep coral selection, live rock for reef builds, and carefully conditioned marine fish, including hard-to-find Achilles tangs that arrive already eating thanks to the store's rigorous quarantine and conditioning work.

Recent visitors have even spotted jellyfish on display — a genuinely rare sight — and marine keepers note that uncommon, rare species regularly turn up here for sale in Greenwich, CT that you simply won't find at a big-box pet shop. The freshwater room holds its own with lush planted display tanks and healthy fish and plants for sale that draw hobbyists from as far as New York City. The staff are the throughline in nearly every review.

Casey gets singled out for remembering customers' kids by name, Kevin for designing custom filtration systems, John for walking first-timers through a complete setup, and newer faces like Tyler for the kind of patient, thousand-dollars'-worth-of-advice guidance that keeps people coming back. One local teacher even credited the team with helping her class pick out and look after their classroom fish. Beyond livestock, House of Fins handles aquarium setup, ongoing tank maintenance, aquascaping for new builds, and genuinely in-depth consultation on stocking, filtration, and compatibility — expertise that spans both freshwater and reef systems.

The honest caveat, echoed by plenty of reviewers, is price: dry goods, frozen foods, and replacement parts run well above online retail. This is a shop that competes on fish health, hand-selected corals, and face-to-face know-how rather than commodity pricing, and for many keepers that trade-off is exactly why they make the drive to Greenwich.

Customer reviews

  • “I'd like to start this review by saying that this isn’t about the availability of items, price points, or quality. This review is about the unprofessionalism of the staff. To put this in perspective, I'm a woman in my early 20s in this hobby. I came into the store to just browse, and aside from me, there were only 2 other customers: one at the register and one being assisted. During my time at the store, I received mean looks from the younger staff. At some point, after being unable to get their attention, I tried to walk over to their station to ask for help once they were done, but instead of being welcoming, they both looked at me with a really mean and unapproachable look. It seemed pretty obvious to me that they didn’t want to help me. So I chose to ask the man at the register instead. Initially, everything seemed pretty fine until I asked him if they had an item in stock. He showed me a completely different product and then tried to play it off as "isn’t that what you asked?" when it was a completely different species. I felt like he was questioning my own knowledge or trying to sell me an item, hoping I wouldn't notice the difference. Which to me seems messed up. I could tell by the way they interacted with the other customers that this was heavily gender-biased. I felt unwanted in the store, so just a heads up. Other than that, the store has a pretty cool and vast selection of items. Their price points aren’t bad. Some items are a little overpriced, while others are extremely reasonable. They had jellyfish in store, which is quite rare. From my observations of their behavior with other customers, the staff know their stuff too.”

  • “This place takes advantage of people if your not in the know. Absolute the most disgusting pricing I have ever seen in my 9 years of being in this hobby. I was in a rush to pick up some media and seachem products and I was not able to go to my regular fish store. My item list consisted of bottle of prime, stability, 2 bottles of chemi pure and two poly pads. I was quoted 536.00 dollars. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!! I called my fish guys and asked for a quote in NJ (Professional store with 5 star raiting) gave him the list for same products.... 83.00. After they heard what I was quoted they literally could not speak. If you are new to the hobby beware. That place is flat out robbing you. NEVER AGAIN!!!!”

  • “The whole nation should know about the people working here, if you want somebody to trust your maintainance to, building a new acuascape or some guidance in either freshwater or saltwater this is your spot. Not even overhyping even tho prices are a little up there I would absolutely consider it fully paying for the ammount of care and information they have for species and the craft. Specially Tyler was amazing during our visit guided us with thousand dollar worth information and espectacular atention. Def coming back soon to get new stocking for my tanks and my new favorite place to come to for real lovers of the craft! 10/10”

  • “I had an amazing experience at House of Fins. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and genuinely helpful—they take the time to answer questions and make sure you’re set up for success. The store itself is the cleanest aquarium shop I’ve ever been to, and the selection is unmatched. They have an incredible variety of fish and plants all healthy and well cared for. You can tell they take pride in what they do. Highly recommend to anyone from beginners to experienced hobbyists!”
