About
Tat Tropical Illusion is a longtime independent aquarium store in Thousand Oaks, CA, and one of the most respected fish shops in greater Ventura County. Customers keep coming back for the same reasons: notably healthy livestock, spotlessly clean display tanks, and staff who genuinely know their fish. One recent reviewer called it "probably the best aquarium store in Ventura county," and that shows in tanks full of fish that buyers report thriving for years.
The selection spans both sides of the hobby. On the freshwater side you'll find bettas, red-tailed sharks, and other community fish for sale in Thousand Oaks, CA, alongside live plants like guppy grass that make planted setups easy to start. The saltwater room is the showpiece, with beautifully set-up reef tanks and coral that catch the eye of even casual browsers.
Pond keepers are covered too — a recent visitor came in for mosquito fish and a staffer named Lux happily helped him pick them out from among the koi. Beyond livestock, the shop stocks tanks, aquarium equipment, fish food, and a deep selection of dry goods for both freshwater and saltwater needs. Newcomers single out the team's patience: several first-timers describe being walked through a complete tank setup with unhurried explanations, and one family credits the store with launching their betta-keeping journey, starting with a single male they named Finny.
The owner is famously reserved — quiet and low-key rather than a hovering greeter — and regulars appreciate the no-pressure freedom to browse. Say hello first and you'll usually get a friendly "have a nice day" on the way out. Recent visitors describe a warm, family atmosphere with knowledgeable staff ready to help the moment you ask.
For Thousand Oaks and Ventura County aquarists who want healthy fish, real plants, and reliable gear under one roof, Tat Tropical Illusion earns its reputation where it counts — in the tanks.

— Alexa5.07 months ago“The BEST fish store around. I have been a customer for several years and yes, the owner seems to be in a bad mood / rude, but he is just reserved and quiet. I like that they don't pester you and follow you around. For those that say he does not say hello, try saying hello first maybe. Never assume he is rude and take it personally.....it is just his nature...He has always said "have a nice day" when I leave, so I have never experienced this "rudeness." What really matters is that they take care of the fish and have a well kept / clean business. They even took 2 red tailed sharks that outgrew my tanks and gave me tons of guppy grass in exchange. All the fish I have purchased from this business have lived well and remained healthy. I understand that not feeling welcomed in a store is a turn off, but just realize that it is not personal.....he is just quiet and minds to himself unless you ask him for help. His staff are always very nice and the tall caucasian guy with dark hair is extremely helpful, pleasant, knowledgable and professional.”
