Tucked into Thousand Oaks, Aquatic Zoo Tropical Fish has been a family-owned fixture since 2006, run by owner Ken with the kind of personal investment that's hard to fake. The store carries both saltwater and freshwater fish alongside pond supplies, and the staff — particularly Lyndon (sometimes spelled Linden) and Sergio — have earned a reputation for walking customers through everything from filter parts for large tanks to setting up a first aquarium. One reviewer recounted how a staffer leak-tested a secondhand 15-gallon tank, sold pre-treated water so it could be stocked same-day, and even loaned out jugs — the kind of above-and-beyond service that builds loyalty.
The inventory can surprise you. One longtime fishkeeper stumbled upon a 12-inch-plus King Dojo loach that had been traded in, the sort of rare find that keeps regulars checking back. The shop stocks tropical fish, aquarium setups, live plants, and supplies, and they've advised pond owners on natural, wildlife-safe algae solutions — a niche offering that earned at least one convert for life.
They also breed singing canaries and keep birds, including Fluffy, a 28-year-old cockatoo who has become something of a local celebrity in the Conejo Valley. The store isn't without its critics. Some reviewers have noted cleanliness and organization issues, and a handful felt pressured by upselling.
But the majority of reviews paint a picture of a shop where the animals are healthy, the guidance is patient, and the staff genuinely care — evidenced by Ken hand-feeding baby tropical birds at closing time and the store taking in rescued goldfish from local ponds. For Thousand Oaks aquarium hobbyists looking for honest consultation on freshwater or saltwater setups, pond-safe treatments, or just an interesting afternoon browsing tanks, Aquatic Zoo delivers a personal, community-rooted experience that big-box pet stores simply can't replicate. Say hi to Fluffy while you're there — bring apple slices.

I stop by Aquatic Zoo from time to time just to see the animals and visit Fluffy, the legendary cockatoo who has been the soul of this place for two decades. I don’t have the capacity to care for a pet myself, but I love them deeply, and this shop feels like a sanctuary where that love is truly understood. You can tell how much heart goes into every inch of this place. Even on a Friday evening, owner Ken is there quietly, patiently hand feeding two baby tropical birds with a small feeding syringe, making sure they’re nourished and comforted right up until closing time. That level of care says everything about the spirit behind Aquatic Zoo. The staff treat every creature with gentleness and respect. The animals are calm, clean, and clearly cherished. Family owned since 2006, so this isn’t just a store, it’s a crown jewel of compassion and community in TO. Show this place some love, and when you visit, say hi to Fluffy (28 years old now!). He’s still greeting everyone with that brilliant mix of intelligence and heart after all these years. And if you want to make his day even brighter, bring him a little treat. He loves apple slices, papaya, banana, or a small piece of sweet potato, just no seeds. I promise, Fluffy will make your day too. 💛

Aquatic Zoo Tropical Fish is an amazing place for fish lovers. The store has a wide variety of tropical fish, aquariums, and supplies. The staff are knowledgeable and always ready to give advice on fish care. The tanks are clean, and the fish look healthy and active. Prices are fair, and it’s a great spot whether you’re a beginner or an experienced hobbyist.

Please tell the owner to surrender the Cockatoo that he keeps in a cage outside. Even in the direct summer sun with no shade. The cage is too small and that bird is always alone because the owner just leaves it there as a decoration. It deserves to live a life of love and socialization. This is true animal CRUELTY and neglect. It makes me sick to see. Sad that it’s even there in the Google Maps 360 photo :( Just waiting to start actually living.

Great experience, very excited with our new aquarium. We appreciate the service, the information and the staff. Since it has been a while since we have had an aquarium, they answered all my questions and help set up the pump system before we left. Setting up the tune aquarium at home was great because we of the staff at Aquatic Zoo. Will be back soon for more plants and fish. Aquariums are awesome!.

We visited 12/26 in search of filter parts for a big tank. Lyndon was amazing! He took the time to find what we needed and was personable and knowledgeable. Will definitely return!

I had an algea problem in a pond that I have been fighting for years. This place was recommended. I won't put chemicals in it because of the birds and bees. They recommended a product that was natural and wildlife friendly. It worked and has saved me so much work. I wish I had found this place a long time ago.

I purchased a new tank for kids. I had a not so great experience at another local store. However since I entered the store Linden was very welcoming answered all my questions without making my self or kids feel intimidated. Needless to say I will definitely return . My kids most of all told me "he was very nice not like the other store". Thank you Linden!

I visited Aquatic Zoo with the intention of browsing their selection of saltwater fish. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they had an impressive variety of fish and an exceptionally well-designed aquarium setup. The staff was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, particularly Ken, who provided me with expert guidance in selecting the appropriate fish for my needs. I highly recommend Aquatic Zoo to anyone interested in saltwater fish, fresh water and even birds.
