Tropical Reef Fish Store in Rancho Cucamonga is a small, owner-operated shop where Jason — the store's driving force — has built a loyal following through sheer passion and willingness to educate. Walk in with a question about your uncycled tank, coral feeding, or African cichlid compatibility, and you're likely to end up in an hour-long conversation that leaves you genuinely more knowledgeable about the hobby. Multiple customers describe Jason as someone who asks questions back, helping you understand the science rather than just pushing product.
The store's strongest suit is its coral selection. Customers drive from as far as Temecula and Ventura County specifically for the frags, which range from affordable beginner pieces to high-end specimens. Jason frequently runs buy-two-get-one deals on corals, and reviewers consistently praise both the quality and pricing.
Saltwater is clearly the primary focus — clownfish, prepared saltwater for purchase, and reef tank consultation are recurring themes in customer feedback. But Tropical Reef isn't exclusively a saltwater shop. Jason stocks freshwater fish including African cichlids like Taiwan Reefs and peacocks that customers report coloring up beautifully after purchase.
He carries bettas, goldfish, endlers, and has mentioned plans to expand his freshwater and live plant inventory. He even helped one family select fish and hardscape for a patio pond, showing a flexibility that bigger stores rarely offer. The shop is admittedly small, and opinions on cleanliness are polarized — some reviewers find the tanks well-maintained, while others have been put off by algae buildup and dim lighting.
The freshwater selection is limited compared to the saltwater side, and a few customers have felt the pricing runs high for what's offered. What keeps people returning is Jason himself. He's the kind of shop owner who'll cut you a break if you're a few dollars short, who'll take your phone calls after the sale, and who treats fish-keeping as a shared enthusiasm rather than a transaction.
For reef hobbyists in the Inland Empire, his coral inventory and genuine expertise make Tropical Reef worth the visit.

First time buying frags came here about 4 weeks ago. I am new to the game. Long story short walked out with 3 frags 1.5-2inches max. Spent little over $250. Somehow stumbled upon PISCES CORAL AND FISH in Rancho when I googled “ coral shops near me” and let me tell you what a HUGGE difference that store is to this one!! You can get @ Pisces fish store 4 frags OVER 2.5 inches under $300, with a wide selection and stunning colors!! as for Tropical Reef shop not so much!! Tropical reefs cleanliness was also considering. TROPICAL REEF -cleanliness 3/10 ⭐️ -prices-selection-size 3/10⭐️ -customerservice-information 4.5/10⭐️ Pisces Coral and Reef -cleanliness 9/10⭐️ -prices-selection-size 10/10⭐️ -customerservice-information 10/10⭐️ Dissatisfied in Tropical Reef, won’t be coming back. Sorry

After all the times I've walked into this store and got the vibe to just not buy anything here. Figured if give it a chance and regretted it the second I got home. Bought a black clown and you can tell thus one was terrorized the entire time it was at this store. They keep the lights off on the tanks for a reason so you can't see the fish. Glad I could donate the over priced $40 to a dying cause. Steer clear of this shop.

Jason was straight forward and eager to educate rather than wanting to make a sale. He helped guide me in the right direction and has been a resource for all my questions and calls. They have a great selection of fresh and salt water fish to choose from. I highly recommend this shop.

Most fillthiest fish store I've ever been in. The tanks & equipment are green-thuck with algorithm & gunke. The few fish & coral are hardly seeable & look larthargic. The smell is sick. Never seen anything like that. Uncompliant-Ca stare law.-health.

Picked up a betta fish here, and the process was very easy. Said what I was looking for, and he showed me all bettas he had available. I looked at them for a bit, chose one, got food, and that was it. Super easy, no fluff, just a good experience overall. My betta is happy and healthy, and absolutely beautiful.
