Serenity Aquarium & Aviary Services, based out of Neenah, Wisconsin, operates in a niche that most hobbyist fish stores don't touch: they provide aquarium and bird aviary installation and ongoing maintenance services primarily for assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and similar institutions. This isn't a retail shop where you walk in and browse rows of tanks — it's a contract-based service company that places freshwater aquariums and aviaries in commercial settings, then sends technicians on a regular schedule to clean, feed, and maintain the animals. The model works like this: Serenity designs and installs custom fish tanks and bird enclosures for facilities, then provides recurring service visits for cleaning, water changes, fish and bird care, and supply replenishment.
Technicians like Chris Carpenter, Jenni, Thom, and sales rep Dave have been name-checked repeatedly by facility staff. At Christian Care Assisted Living, Chaplain Linda Ferguson praised Chris's thoroughness in maintaining both the aviary and aquarium, noting his engaging interactions with residents. At another facility, a staff member credited Dave with bringing ducklings for resident enjoyment and delivering beautiful aviary setups.
However, the reviews reveal a deeply inconsistent operation. Multiple facilities report missed service visits, unreturned phone calls stretching days or weeks, and technicians arriving without proper supplies. One facility described filthy tank conditions that persisted despite repeated complaints.
More troubling are reports from nursing home visitors who found birds in distress — overgrown nails, empty water dishes, and 24/7 spotlights disrupting the animals' rest cycles. The company's contract structure, which reportedly prohibits facility staff from handling the animals between service visits, has drawn particular criticism when service intervals stretch too long. Serenity fills a legitimate need — therapeutic animal displays bring real joy to elderly residents, and when their service works well, facilities rave about it.
But the gap between their best and worst service experiences is wide, and prospective clients should ask pointed questions about technician coverage, emergency response times, and contingency plans for staffing disruptions.

Birds were placed in a hight traffic area where light needed to be left on 24'7 for safety and cleaning not allowing proper rest for birds WATER EMPTY FOR DAYS and many birds died due to neglect in nursing facility here.

I went to visit my grandma at her nursing home the oaks at west Cobb and saw the finch enclosure. The birds were in such bad shape and their nails were so long they couldn’t even properly stand. It was so saddening to see them in this condition. I saw the business card in the cage and reached out to the company caretaker and she told me she would come in 2 weeks. I told her that’s totally inappropriate because the birds condition warranted a visit ASAP to cut their nails and clean their space and fill their water. The rep told me the contract is 12 weeks so to go early she will charge the nursing home a fee and she said the nursing home is not allowed to handle the birds or deal with the sanctuary or they will be sued for a breach of contract. Serenity also put a 24/7 spot light on the birds which is terrible for their health, as birds need it to be dark to sleep. It was honestly terrible.

Absolute worse fish tank services! Multiple calls made to rectify issues - we were told a new tank was required - filthy tank issues remained. Canceled service; customer support never returned my call request.

i have worked with Serenity and with Critter Dave first when he was a Service Rep. and then in sales. He brought ducklings to our facility for the residents. We have always had great service from him and quick responses to our questions. I would recommend Serenity to anyone looking to add an aquarium or aviary. He does beautiful work!

Our residents and staff at Nature Trail have enjoyed our bird aviary. Serenity was very helpful in assisting us with finding the right aviary and birds for our location. Every afternoon listening to them chirp and play is a way for us to bring some outdoor happiness to our residents. I would highly recommend them.

This is Linda Ferguson. I am the Chaplain at Christian Care Assisted Living Christian Care is blessed to have Serenity Aquarium and Aviary Services and Chris Carpenter as the Aviary and Aquarium Technician for our facility. Chris is very thorough in cleaning and maintaining both the Aviary and Aquarium. He has an excellent knowledge of both fish and birds; prior to the Covid situation, Christ was very engaging with residents and staff as they watched him do his job. He answered questions in a kind and interesting way. He is very accommodating to our needs for these animals which the resident love. Chris is the best technician we have ever had, and we are grateful for his help and knowledge. Linda Ferguson December 16, 2020
